2+ min boot up on Win 7, even in Safe Mode (!)

Hey all,

I know slow boot ups are hard to diagnose, but this case is peculiar and I need help from guys who know way more about Win 7 than I do.

At first, Win 7 was quick to boot-up. I was impressed by its speed. Then, out of nowhere, it began to take 2+ mins to boot up. The boot-up hangs at the Starting Windows screen, and my fan kicks up at full speed while doing so. When the fan slows down to normal, the wait is finally over and it goes into the log-in screen.

I've booted and safe mode, and the same thing happens. It takes just as long for it to get started, and my fan still spins hard while doing so. This eliminates programs that I've installed.

If it helps, the system loaded all the drivers quickly, and it took its sweet time when it was on the screen that described my proccesser.

I'm not sure what to make of this.

I read that changing your BIOS from AHCI to native IDE helps, but I can't do that readily. My BIOS is Insyde F.14 dv6, and there is no option in the BIOS screen to change the SATA. Any info on hacks to change this would be most appreciated.

Otherwise, Win 7 runs fine, but this issue is really annoying and I'd like to solve it.

Even though, it was slow in safe mode, I am leaning toward a driver. Go to device manger and look for any yellow markers inidicating corrupted drivers.

I disabled the anti virus service at boot up and it's still slow. I noticed that it became so slow after I installed the new COMODO firewall, but even with that disabled, the boot up is still slow.

I checked all my devices (including hidden ones) and didn't see any yellow triangles of doom.

Yep I found a bunch of scheduled tasks. How can I go about killing the ones I don't think I need?

I had over 30 tasks and cleaned up all unnecessary ones. I have 14 ones now and they don't run at system start up.

Unfortunately, it still takes as long for the system to boot up. On the plus side, it takes less time for my start up programs to load now.

I cleaned out my registry of errors as well.

Get rid of those icons on desk top. Make them short cuts instead, if you need them.

Ok, I had some folders and stand-alone programs I threw on there. I moved them to Program Files instead and make shortcuts. I made sure everything else was a short cut as well. Didn't really help.

It'd be nice if there was a boot tracer that presented problems in plain English lol.

I downloaded and installed COMODO 4. I noticed when it asked me to reboot to finish the installation, it took so much longer than normal.

But when I disabled the COMODO service, there was no effect. It might have changed something internally.

My last save was too long ago, so I'll check if COMODO has a solution to this problem. I love the FW and don't want to get rid of it. :cry:

Sorry for the double post but

COMODO is not the culprit. I uninstalled it and rebooted twice. Nothing.

I checked HP site for BIOS updates for my model. My BIOS is up to date.

Any other ideas are welcome.

Services (in search type services)
Startup items (msconfit)
Tasks (task scheduler). Probably maintenance defrag, chkdsk etc. Sometimes a new antivius has a maintenance schedule.

I had a simular problem after a botched attempt at changing the settings of my RAM. When the motherboard automatically reset itself is when the long boot times started. After several hours of trouble shooting where nothing I tried seemed to help. What finally fixed the problem on my computer was a manual reset of the CMOS. I hope you get the problem resolved soon.
