Solved An error happened during the mapping process.

I have just finished updates for an OEM installed Windows 7 box purchased ealier today. When I first started WIndows, I used the Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center, successfully, to build a "See full map" diagram of my home-office (soho) network.

However, after all updates have been applied and also a Firmware update to my DIR-655 router (to the current release), I was happy with operations and getting ready to close shop for the night, but I see that I can NO LONGER produce a network map, as I get "An error happened during the mapping process." This is, needless to say, disturbing.

How can I... 1) diagnose and 2) resolve this problem to get back to a normal operational state (the ability to see a full network map)? All other aspects of the network seem to be fine and are behaving properly.

Before you ask, yes, I have rebooted everything.

I have the same router with current firmware and my network map is working fine for me. When you open the map there may be a choice of networks there at the top left, be sure the correct network is chosen.

I have only one network. Here are screen snapshots of what I see, if that helps.

Checking for more information produces a standard help screen:
This can occur for the following reasons:

• <LI class=listItem>A computer or device on the network restarted during the mapping process. To fix this problem, wait for the computer or device to finish starting, and then refresh the network map by pressing F5.
  <LI class=listItem>Your computer is connected to a wireless network and the wireless signal quality is poor or intermittent. To fix this problem, move your computer closer to the wireless router or access point.
  <LI class=listItem>A device on the network, such as a hub or switch, is not working properly or is not compatible with the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) protocol, which Windows uses to create the map. To fix this problem, disable the device, turn it off, or remove it from your network.
• Responses from other devices on the network are delayed or there is an incompatible router on the network. If responses are delayed, try waiting a few minutes and then refreshing the network map by pressing F5. If a router is incompatible, try disabling the router, turning it off, or removing it from your network.

1) Nothing restarted during the mapping
2) There is no wi-fi in this PC, it's wired to the router
3) My router was compatible hours before the problem occured and
Windows 7 had PREVIOUSLY displayed a network map on this PC
4) Ditto.

Also, there are were no problems encountered during any of the windows udpates.

You don't need to have two networks, just an extra network adaptor will give you the option to choose it or not.

Hmm interesting, not sure what would cause that. You might try typing "sfc /scannow" without the quotes into your command prompt then hit enter, let it finish the scan. If there are any file integrity problems that should fix them.

While I should expect no problems with an out-of-the box system, I ran the SFC /SCANNOW

RESULT: No problems
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

I also tried installed a trial version of a third party mapping product. Guess what, it can see the network, but Microsoft cannot. Attached is a diagram. I edited the router name on the diagram for privacy. Windows 7, however, still gets the error.

Something is blocking the map in that case, A/V software or a third party firewall.

Well, I have already reviewed the firewall and do not see any problems.

I'm saying that which ever A/V or third party firewall, meaning "not a windows program" "anti virus or firewall" software you have installed can cause this problem to occur.

Using any type of third party networking or mapping program can also cause these types of problems to occur. There are just so many programs out that are not entirely compatible with with Windows 7 it's difficult to keep up with them all.

Other than that I would install any of the Windows updates that apply to your system.

I am now running without Anti-virus software and no firewall on. Windows does not like that, nor do I, however the network mapping STILL DOES NOT WORK. I think that demonstrates that it is not some firewall rule creating a problem.

I'm running 133NA firmware came out 1/19/10 but never had a map problem with the older firmware.

Found this but assumed you weren't using the public connection option because you are at a Home-office.

The computer is running Windows 7 and is connected to a network that is assigned to the "Public place" network location. When a computer is on a network assigned to the “Public place” location, Windows cannot correctly place it on the network map. To fix this problem, you can try changing the network location to "Private" or connecting to a network that is assigned to the "Private" network location.

You can also use the standard Workgroup or Homegroup which will allow you to show up on the map. Network discovery also needs to be enabled in the Advanced Network and Sharing page but for other machines to show up and for standard sharing you need to have that enabled anyway.

Well, this looks like it's going nowhere, so I'm going to restore my brand new machine to my backup system image and see if I can get back to a previously working state.

Could be a bad Win7 installation but I suspect it's something that was inadvertantly installed after the fact. Just be sure and check the map function after installing each piece of software so maybe you can nail down the cause that way.

Thanks for the info. I have not tried anything that recent and am spending time in the D-Link forums now. I see a lot of issues regarding the USB support. Perhaps it relates to my Windows problem, perhaps not, but I'm doing my homework.

No, I would not connect as a public place. It's a home network. While I am trying to solve this problem nothing else is plugged in. I like to reduce the number of variables at any given time.

It's just hard to have the patience.

As I said, the network mapping worked at one point. I just wouldn't know at WHICH point it stopped working. As it's a new PC, I don't mind absorbing a little pain to back track the installs.
