Hi there. I have a Dell precision T5400 with 3 drives- C drive 450GB 15ksas
Render R drive 300GB 15k sas
and Media M drive 1TB 7.2k sata

I currently have this on XP 32bit and are looking at partitioning the 450GB drive to run Both XP32bit and Windows 7 64bit. I heard that if I create a file in 64 bit OS that it some how formats it and if I read it on the 32bit OS it wont read it. Is this true?
Also should I divide the partition in half say 200GB for XP which has Avid Liquid on it(video editing software) and 250GB for windows 7 64bit which will have Avid Media composer 5 on (also video editing software - Best on the planet!)

Any comments would be appreciated

There's no problem reading files.

The 32 bit OS can't run 64 bit executables. The 64 bit OS can run both 32 and 64 bit applications. (There are few 64 bit applications at the moment.) The 32 bit OS needs 32 bit drivers, and the 64 bit OS needs 64 bit drivers.

As an aletrnative to dual booting, you could consider running the stuff that needs XP in XP mode under Win7. That's actually XP running in a virtual machine. (It's free, but only with Win7 Professional or Ultimate.) I've never tried it (Home Premium user), but it is supposed to work well.

You have not filled in your system specs yet, as we need to assist you. Go to your first message at the lower left and fill in the remainder as complete as possible. ==
One thing you have to be aware of is finding the right drivers for your 32 bit programs that are going to be used by the Win 7 64-bit. There are not alot of 64-bit programs out there. A second thing to consider is do you need 64 bit. If you do not have more than 4 Gig of Memory, there is no reason to use 64 bit.

I have 5 computer systems and am deciding which one I should put up as my spec for this forum.
As for My Dell T5400, it is a Quad core Xeon e5430 2.66Ghz with 4 gig ram, xp pro 32bit, Nvidia quadro fx 5600 1.5GB card.
Avid media composer 5 has a system requirement of windows 7 64bit. It can run on 32bitxp pro but not as highly recomended as Windows 7 64
(bithttp://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=365919&Hilite=)

I have 4 gig of ram now but that will change to what is required soon.
