Just installed it, all running fine.

Like the new Grey & mesh background, hope it's not just for Beta purposes & will be present in the Stable release.

Yeah, I agree. The new look fits in a lot better with my computer's overall theme and visual style. I hope they keep it as well.

Took a while to get FTM working. Got it and like it. Installed it on my moms computer as well.

I just downloaded the 32 and 64 bit versions, haven't installed it yet. I noticed there isn't a separate windows XP 32 bit version anymore? The new 32 bit version must support XP, Vista and 7? I wonder if the 64 bit version now supports XP 64?

I'm pretty sure that the 32bit original MSE had a completely separate version for XP. I'm sure that is some how programed differently to run best on XP. Seeing as how the support for XP is shrinking fast, they might not come out with another version for it. I also doubt a version will ever come out for XP x64.

Just as an aside...

To use the MS File transfer manager in a browser other than IE you need to download the actual FTM executable (it is available on the MS site but you will need to look for it

When you have is available you need to associate the download file type with the FTM on your machine.

I have done this, on sites where IE was a prohibited browser, and it does work but to be honest it is a lot easier to simply use IE for this type of transfer

I thought about that a bit before doing it. Considering my mom doesn't visit hardly any websites, never downloads anything and the computer will be on standby 90% of the time, I'd say she is safer than most already. I think its better than nothing at any rate. Even the first MSE beta from over a year ago never failed me, and I worked it pretty hard . Don't think I'm ignoring your advice. I just spent half an hour debating whether or not to go uninstall it and install the regular version because of what you said.

On a different note. I just noticed the option about only running the scheduled scan when the computer was on and not is use. I know this was also present in the original, but never thought about it much. I decided to turn that off. I care more about the scan running then my computer being fast.

If it crashes her computer and deletes all of her data, you would think twice. Beta is beta for a reason.

Yes if you go to the MSE site and click the "Locals and Languages" there is a separate Windows XP 32bit entry. My guess is it was done so you could use it for XP mode which is 32 bit, even on Windows 7 64 bit. If I read things correctly on the beta site, XP is still supported, so it must be in the single 32 bit download. Actually, I can confirm that it, as I have installed the beta on one of my XP PCs. At one time I can remember seeing posts by people wondering why Microsoft supported 32 bit XP but not 64 bit in MSE. The answer is it's for XP mode but also works for your regular XP install also. I still have a couple of XP boxes here at home and use MSE on them like I do on my windows 7 boxes. Anyway I didn't see anywhere on the Beta site where it said XP 32 bit only was supported so it just made me wonder if the 64 bit beta would install on XP 64 bit. I figue if I pose the question maybe someone will try it. I don't have an XP 64 bit install to test it on myself.

Asked me if I wanted to turn firewall on - I never knew it was off.

I got the same prompt and I know my windows firewall was already turned on. The prompt I'd like to see though is the one to tell you it was going to turn automatic updates on. When I'm doing a clean install I turn it off until I have all the updates and extra Microsoft programs I use installed from my thumb drive. Then I can turn it on and patch it all in one go when I'm done, without the system being bogged down doing it in the background while I'm trying to install stuff. MSE turns it on when you install it without any warning.

This came put just the right time. I was just looking something to replace my F-Secure 2010 which I got free for four months. I had 26 days left, but I got so annoyed by the reminders of how many days I had left.

MSE works very well, it is fast, quiet, simple and good looking

Does the fAct that it's asking if you want the firewall on or off mean, that the Windows Firewall is now good enough to be used on it's own or is it still highly recomended that you use a seperate firewall?

Any file. EXEs, pictures, documents, etc.

Fizwin7, i just noticed the same thing. They might have gotten rid of it or it my not work in the beta.

Wow, same here, tried several different file types, zip, exe and folders and no "Scan with Microsoft Security Essentials" option in the right click menu. Something else I've noticed is there is no MSE Icon on the taskbar now.:shock:
