I'm looking to get a new video card, but can only afford a card that is around $200. I was looking at the GTX 460 and the HD 5830 since they are about the same price. Which one of those is better? Also, would I see a great improvement in frame rates with either of these cards (currently have an 8800 GT)? I'm using a 23" monitor with 1920x1080 native resolution. My current hardware is a Intel Core 2 Quad @ 2.4 Ghz (Q6600), 3 GB RAM, and an 8800 GT. Any other suggestions are welcome :)

Get the ati it is better. They are more ahead the nvidia. It has eyefinity so if you ever got a second monitor you could make it one screen. I recommend going to newegg to get it they would sell it for less.

These cards are very competitive/close in performance.
Compared to the 8800GT, you should definitely see an improvement.

With benchmark figures [of the two you are looking at] being very close, it then becomes a choice of which card do you like better?

Now, the thing is, is the 1GB GTX 460 better than the HD 5830? And is it worth the extra $30 or so when on a budget? I really need to be sure cause I probably won't be getting another video card for quite a while.

to be honest the 5830 and the 5770 are the same card only differnce is the 5770 is 128 bit and the 5830 256 bit compared to nvdia everyone and i mean mostly everyone is going ati the shopper now days go for a more convenient card vs all that money plus long term

there will always be a upgrade and basicly ati is starting to put nvida in there place but up to you like i said before the 5830 and the 5770 are the same card

you can also grab that 5770 for alittle less and save some budget

If your talking between improvement.. The 5830 will sit behind a 460 Fermi. This is the difference between manufacturer specs and actual run-time.

On a side note: These 2 cards will trade blow to blow on some games and other games, (especially older games) the 460 will outperform. This really comes down to user preference. Are you ATI or Nvidia?

No question about it.

GTX 460 all the way. 5850-level performance for ~$200.

I don't really have a preference, but I think NVIDIA is pretty "cool". Also, would it be worth it to get the 1GB Superclocked EE GTX 460 (01G-P3-1373-AR): http://www.evga.com/products/moreInfo.asp?pn=01G-P3-1373-AR&family=GeForce 400 Series Family&sw= priced at $250 or is it not really worth it? If it is in a way should I then just spend a few extra bucks and, if there is, get a card a step up?

The superclocked edition starts touching near performance of a ati 5850. So performance to dollar if it is in your price range.. then get it. If you have a bit more to spend and can get the 5850.. then get that instead.

Thanks guys you really helped me a lot! Any more information and suggestions are very welcome :D

EDIT: Oh yeah... one more thing I forgot (could be pretty important). If I put the new card in a PCI Express x16 slot, and not a 2.0 slot, how much performance loss am I looking at? Will it still be worth it or would it than just be smart to upgrade the mobo first? Don't really have the money for it though...

You won't notice any difference. I ran my Radeon HD 5850 (PCIe 2.0) on a P35 motherboard (PCIe 1.0) and it wasn't slowed down by any means. When I upgraded to a P45 motherboard (PCIe 2.0) I didn't notice any improvement.

Alright, now I just have to make sure it will fit and pick a new PSU.

I do recommend the 1GB over the 768MB GTX460 (better performance).
