Solved StarCraft fix holy cow!

7068 Killed SC

Hello, I think I already posted it, but StarCraft was put down somewhere near build 7068. My fix worked great from 7000 - 7068, however now a new solution needs to be found.

If you are on the RC1- you should try the new "XP Mode" and see how that works- I'm not sure if that extra feature is available for download yet- i'll give it a try later tonight if i can find it.

works for me

Just for the record:

For me it runs great with Build 7100

  • right-click starcraft.exe and open "properties"
  • go to compatibility
  • select run in compatibility mode for WindowsXP SP3
  • check ALL the checkboxes under Settings

Hit Ok - and you're all set :D
No open "display settings" required for me (as mentioned in previous posts).

Hmm.. I'm on build 7100 and still these settings do not work- however opening the "display properties" does not work either. The game has always looked fine if you dont patch it, but once you're up to the current patch it looks like crap (so it may be the game and not win7).

What version is your game Jim?

Well I've tried XP mode and it doesn't work in there either. It complains about needing a 640x480 with 256 colors desktop... Guess I might just install Ubuntu and run it in Wine there...

Same problem on XPmode here on windows 7 RC (7100)

didnt have any problems running it nativly on windows 7 RC tho, didnt have to do anything, only problem was that it was fullscreen. (unpatched install from Starcraft Ultimate collection of the best-selling startegy games box, starcraft and brood war 2 disk box)

hope there will be a way to fix it for the XPmode.

Just so you guys know, the menu only looks terrible. In game there's virtually no difference, so it's still completely playable- just annoying to navigate through the menu. The differences in game are just on the edge of the fog of war it has a mild discoloration that isnt very noticable, but the water does look a little wierd, but those are the only two differences i've noticed.

You could also revert Win7 builds, or have multiple Win7 particians, SC worked fine under the pre 7000 builds, such as 6068

sorry for the late reply:

I'm using an up-to-date sc (1.16.1) - works fine for me with the settings given in my previous post.

Too bad this is causing so much trouble.

Good luck, c u on iccup ;-)

This seems to have fixed it for me.

Well I've read rumers that StarCraft II is coming out soon... well this fall... and that's good for me. I'm taking a break from SC personally- because I dont want to get so attached to the first one that I dislike any new features in SCIII. I gotta stop playing DiabloII as well :P

O yea... there's a preorder @ EBGames if you're a sucker :)

So these fixes don't work for me. However, someone mentioned in passing on another forum that 8-bit (256 color) games don't work full-screen in Win7 because the taskbar is "always on top" and that it is what messes up the colors:

franpa said:
close all instances of Explorer.exe because the Taskbar in Windows 7 is displayed "on top" of other windows ****ing the palette up in old 8bit games that use similar methods to the Surface Renderer in DOSBox.

Worms Armageddon which is a Direct Draw game also suffers it but I have a BAT file to work around it.

Code:
taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe
E:\"Worms Armageddon"\"Wormkit.exe"
pause
start explorer.exe

This works for me, except that it freezes at "Loading" until I alt+tab out and back in. Weird.

The only solution that works for me is having the Screen Resolution window open and then running starCraft.
I run it with these compatibility settings:

  • Run in 256 colors
  • Disable visual themes
  • Disable desktop composition
  • Display display scaling on high DPI settings
  • Run as administrator
This method also works for me with Age of Empires 2.

Just tested your method, works as well for me.
I just opened a command prompt and entered the taskkill command to kill explorer.
Ran SC and no color issues whatsoever.
It didn't lock up when loading for me.
