Microsoft to release fix for Windows Shortcut flaw on Monday

Hopefully it will! That will be a relief for many.

As you can imagine this is supposed to correct a vunerability in Windows itself and would leave a great number of people in an awkward position.

As for testing it someone a little more advanced and running a temp install on a VM or an old spare case still onhnad would be the best candidate for something like that. That would keep things isolated entirely where security tests could be performed.

Yesterday I downloaded the update on Windows 7 Home Premium with no problems. I didn't have the work around. I have run 3 security programs after down loading the update also with no problems. I'm happy to say M/S was quick with this one. I hope they keep up with the quick updates. Thats why I check for updates a couple times a day, it only takes seconds.

All I needed here was the system restart when 3 including the fix went right on. Two were simply the typical updates seen about every other month along with the one seen monday.

Well... I risked myself, but worked fine so far... I installed the patch on Windows XP SP3, Windows 7 Home Premium x64 and Windows 7 Professional x64 (Desktop/laptop)... Just a question, Do I need this patch for XP mode on my laptop?

The record breaking update will deliver 14 security bulletins, fixing a record-tying 34 vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows, Office, Internet Explorer and Silverlight. Microsoft hasn't addressed this many vulnerabilities in a single month since June 2010, but only released 10 bulletins.

They do care of servicing their softwares and i'm glad they do. I have mostly follow all MS security patches since, never had major probs! Thanks!

Considering all the bad press Vista got MS is far more focused on customer satisfaction with 7.

Another factor that played a larger role in the success with 7 sales so far was the longer period of time seen between the time the RCs came out and the expiration date when comparing the shorter period seen for the Vista RC1 and RCs releases where far more people saw the opportunity to try 7 out.

Well at least you know MS isn't slipping behind with 7 so far. These latest updates however are addressed to deal with security issues with XP as well as Vista and 7 however.

As for not having 7 on presently I would still be running an XP/Vista dual boot all 32bit of course in order to still use old apps when booted in XP not Vista. By the time some Vista updates were available guess which new version appears!

Well, since after the RC (i also tested as many here) i needed a new computer and if MS would have waited a year more before their 7 final release, i'll surely had done an upgrade to Vista SP2, but that was so quick to put it on 7 retail version from MS.
That's maybe why someone in the house own the Vista SP2 that i got used to it...and thought that way

Vista with SP2 is still a good version there but does have it's drawbacks especially when working with older hardwares. It was certainly a leap in security over XP even with SP3 finally out while that version of the UAC is an annoyance. Stability wise A Plus! as well over the previous versions.

7 obviously is moving forward even further in both securiity and stability but offers something else Vista seemed to lack in namely 7 is not only backward compatible to Vista but a great deal of XP items with the 32bit 7 anyways. That is seen not only with the return of support for Fat but try running an old XP build with the original XP software disks for the hardwares.

The reason for 7 being pushed forward faster is explained by the reactions to Vista lacking sales plus the rethinking that MS had to do in order to reach the typical user by staying on top of things with the updates as well as the initial cry to OEMs to have driver support ready. The RCs being more widely used provided quite a bit more feedback needed for preparing the final build we run now.

Despite the moved up time table for the release date from the early 1/31/2010 type projections it hasn't been a flop lacking the support. In fact it's now prompted MS to look for other flaws present in previous versions as well as any still remaining initial left in 7 explaining the new updates coming this week as well as the one early last week.

To keep it simple. So far M/S has made Windows 7 work as it should and the few updates work as they should. I have to add; it's about time.

To add to that furthere someone mentioned that you can run 7 "out of the box" for the most part without the need for an SP! That's a bit different then seen with the previous versions for a change.

Vista wasn't anywhere near as bad there with the need for SP1 to correct the inability to report the full amount of memory(4gb and over) on the 32bit side. Many report performance gains following SP2 for that version.

XP on the other hand was desperite for SP3! What a contrast from 7!

I disagree. SP3 was nothing but security patches that people already had or would have gotten. I'm not aware of any added features or efficiency improvements. That would be SP2.

Features added to SP3:
-Turns black hole router detection on by default
-Network Access Protection client
-Group Policy support for IEEE 802.1X authentication for wired network adapters.
-Credentials Security Service Provider
-Descriptive Security options in Group Policy/Local Security Policy user interface
-An updated version of the Microsoft Enhanced Cryptographic Provider Module (RSAENH) that is FIPS 140-2 certified (SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 algorithms)
-Installing without requiring a product key during setup for retail and OEM versions

There might be more, but none of them were nearly needed as much as most of what was included in SP2

SP2 was definitely an improvement without doubt for XP while SP3 also contained over 1,000 fixes long awaited. Vista brought in more stability from the start but was simply the MS expression of a "large version" of Windows will all the new features being introduced as well as the extra services along with the updated security.

7 of course was the large turnaround while keeping and improving the stability and security the focus on a lighter version of Windows was needed. The continuing on the spot support is the side benefits!
