Microsoft tweaks antipiracy tech for Windows 7

With Windows 7, Microsoft is making some subtle changes to the ways it tries to thwart piracy.

As has been the case for some time, Microsoft's strategy hinges on requiring a user to electronically verify their copy of the software, a process known as activation, and then the software also periodically validates that a copy of Windows is genuine.

In Windows Vista, if a user does not activate their software immediately, they get a warning that they still need to do so. The dialog box offers two options, to activate immediately or to do so later. However, the activate later box cannot be checked for 15 seconds.

Microsoft decided this was a bit too annoying. With Windows 7, users can click activate later immediately, but then get a dialog box touting the benefits of activation.

It's the latest effort by Microsoft to scale back the intrusiveness of its technology while still aiming to deter piracy. With the first service pack to Vista, Microsoft made the software significantly more usable to those whose versions of Windows are determined not to be genuine. Before that, Vista systems entered a nearly unusable "reduced functionality mode" once they were deemed to be non-genuine.

"We think we've gotten it to a pretty good place where it strikes an effective balance," said Alex Kochis, director of product management for Microsoft's Genuine Windows unit. "We're committed to the program for the long term because it works."

Microsoft said in December 2007 that it was seeing Windows Vista pirated at only half the rate of Windows XP. Kochis said that general trend has continued.

With Windows 7, Microsoft is also changing the name of its antipiracy technology, from Windows Genuine Advantage to Windows Activation Technologies. The Windows Genuine name took some beatings in the Windows XP time frame, so probably a good move from a PR standpoint.

The software maker is also adding technology designed to make it easier for businesses to activate multiple machines as well as manage activation for virtual machines.

Why would MS not charge for their work? Did you maybe forget the smiley? MS is a for-profit entity, and if that does not fit your personal values, then look at a open software solution.

Hey, as long as it works I'm willing to pay for it. If you don't want to pay for an operating system then switch to linux

Honestly though, they could lower the prices a bit, I'm not saying go from like $300 to $30 but maybe down to like $100 for Home Premium, $50 for basic, etc.

Just my thoughts.

I think that for the efforts they've put together it's fair to pay the right price.

By the way, if the licence was 300$ think that you're using it almost each day, let's say 300 days a year. You use it for more than one year let's say 3 year before change (but you can transfer your licence! so

300/300 = 1
and then 1/3 = 0.33 cent per day, whoop whoop not to expensive

and it will probably not be 300€

Huh? I'm using Windows 7 RC. Your point? Win 7 is available from MS as a free download. Otherwise I am using my MSDN Vista install on my development rig.

I will be buying Win 7 when it comes out. Again, your point?

Are you talking about an interim build??? of a beta OS that the manufacturer is giving out? If you want to laugh at me for not being able to spell build, that's fine and I'll take my hit , but I am not pirating a software that is not even up for sale.

Notice I'm on build 7100, now. And there will always be some form of pirating, and I'm sure MS accounts for that, but that doesn't make it right. I wish MS could forego the whole activation process, but the bottom line they need to. If not people will steal, errrr... pirate.

I noticed you getting picked on... but to throw in another... hydrogen and oxygen arent chemicals, they are elements which can then make up a chemical if combined with something, thats what makes it chemistry... i know you didnt state the quote, but you copied it as so... which is about the same as standing behind it.

Well, I think hydrogen and oxygen can be referred as chemicals, as they don't exist as H / O but H2 / O2 ... Or am I mistaken
And it also takes an enormous pressure to combine them together to make water

the "2" reffers to how many atoms of that element it takes in the combination of the chemical... example chemical water 2 atoms of Hydrogen 1 atom of oxygen, thus making the chemical H20 also known as Water


also the "pressure" you refer to as making water..... pressure is not always the way to make a chemical or an potentially new element, this can also be created via heat, friction, electrical charge, etc
