What don't you like about Windows 7?

You don't have to use them,
...

No, we dont have to use them, now. But if we dont complain about the features that we do not like, it increases the chances that those features will become a mandatory standard in the future.

I wonder why you bothered to install Seven, you obviously want an 98/XP/VISTA.SEVEN OS, I'm sure if you ask M$ nicely they'll knock one up for you, after all such a special customer as yourself they'll drop everything, one month, you haven't broke the suface yet, and your on your soapbox.:D

Why did we install it? As I said in my somewhat lengthy response to the original question, I drank the Pro-W7 cool-aid. Virtually every source of main media reporting on W7 was that it was perfect. I just assumed that threads like this one, and
Windows 7 Search Sucks! | OS Attack were full of lame whiners. But now, I have to say, while there is that element, there are lots of serious users, who have valid complaints. Also, possibly because some of us are not so lucky as to have complete freedom of choice when it comes to our computers. Now and then, there or organizational factors to consider.

Did you ever notice how many of Brink's excellent tutorials involve Registry edits? That suggests to me that there are usability issues beyond the skill of the typical user.

Why is that?

because win 7 thinks its doing me a favor by suggesting this folder to me all the time, weather i'm opening a file or saving one .

and shockingly, my massive media is stored and sorted my own way away from this folder .

You do know you can configure the libraries to point to any folder you want...right? It can point to dozens of different locations with one library. So why is that a problem? Libraries allows one not to use the locations in C:\Users\[username] but where ever you want! And Thus removing focus from C:\Users\[username]\Documents and using the Library instead.

Maybe I just don't see what the issue is with having your files where you want them and correlate them into a single view.

snip ... snip ...

It irritates me that I have to go to a third-party utility like KatMouse to get the mouse scroll to work where it is hovering on a non-selected window or frame. I also wish that the Snip tool could be set to work like MWSnap to be a very fast take-a-pic for visual documentation of reminders.

I agree with this one. I use Xmouse. Personal preference !

... snip ... snip ..

I dont like that Explorer has been crippled with no user-settable toolbar, and no way (that I can find) to have one button that is

Let's face it; the reason for Opera, Firefox and Chrome is Internet Explorer. M$ haven't figured that out yet I guess !

... snip ... snip

But more than anything else, I dont like that in W7, "search", one of the most basic utilities of the digital world, takes a full semester to learn how to use, and there is no textbook for the class. I guess

Try this great search program. It's called Everything. It's lightening fast and there is NO learning curve. I set it up to run on the Win S key combo and it finds anything and everything instantly. :D

And finally, wysiwyg is a boob. The name of the forum is "What don't you like about Windows 7?" and then he makes dumb comments with nothing constructive! :zip:

I use Windows, always was indifferent to it... Was a Linux snob a little.... But 7. I don't know if it is subconscious because they pre-released it for beta, but it has got a flow, a non-specific feeling of quality, and in my opinion, that maybe MS this time, put thought into making the best OS for people beyond those who don't know or don't care to learn what the control panel is or does.

Of course, I know open source is for communists, but I never thought MS encouraged people to learn how to make the most out of a tool which is there OS...

To support my sentiments, I'll just finish with my favorite quote on the matter....

"Give a man a fish, he eats for a day.... teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime." But unfortunately, the share price in fish accordingly plummet.

People/knowledge/empowerment vs. corporate/capitalistic avarice.

I am a fan of both, so I certainly don't sleep at night.

This is a negative thread. Please play nice. It's my soapbox too.
___________________________________________________________________________

@periboob - I agree about the reg edits- and most of what you said in your "Long" post, were good and valid points.

I don't like libraries either. Most of the solutions I have seen simply hide them. I don't WANT to get used to them. There needs to be an easy way to make them totaly go away for people who would rather not have them. One that does not involve reg edits. Not only are they something I dont want or need, and an annoyance (To me), There is something just plain scary about something that snoops across my hard drive(s) and delivers a list of filies in one "Convenient" place. Big brother anyone? (I have indexing turned off too. I'll wait a few more seconds for a search.)

I don't have anything to hide; and lets face it, if some entity wanted info off a hard drive connected to the internet, they can still get it. I like my privacy though. Lets not make things TO easy. :) Don't get me wrong.... Just because i'm paranoid dosn't mean everyone has to be also. I'm not saying get rid of libraries, Just make them easy to get rid of for people who don't want or need them. I too, do not lose files on my hard drive, and like the way I have things organized. I rather resent someone "helping". (Although I DO realize there are people out there that appreciate the help.)

Summary:
1.To many reg edits that need to be a menu option in the GUI.
2. Keep libraries for those that like them, but make them easy to get rid of, (Totaly gone. Not just hidden.) for those that don't want or need them.

I'll step down for now... anyone else want up here? :)

This is a Vista & 7 dislike (I skipped Vista): On Recording Devices, the Stereo Mix or sound card is no longer allowed to record audio. I am certain Microsoft gave in to the Digital Rights Management and Intellectual Property arguments, but not everyone wanted these features to pirate software.

i-Sound Recorder for Windows 7 will allow me to work around this, but I hate adding third party tools. Also, I still can't capture the Visual Studio applications that I create to provide demos with sound to my end users.

Nope you are wrong. I have StereoMix on my card. It is up to the manufactures to implement it into there drivers. Microsoft does not block it.

I'm not 100% sure I believe this, but I'll go with it since I can't prove the contrary on your system.

So most older PCs, that were built prior to Win7, would likely not be able to support this.

Correct?

When shopping for a new PC (not this year, of course), is there a way to verify that StereoMix is supported on them?

Any REAL sound card like someting from m-audio or anything like that has full in/out/mix/monitor recording. Built-in audio is fine for beeps and boops and maybe listening to mp3s but if you care about actually recording audio or making music you'll be getting a real sound device anyway anyway. I'm not sure that any motherboards come with any decent audio built in. I do believe that such devices were pressured into not supporting monitor/mix recording actually. But there is NO WAY they can get away with that wholesale as PCs for DAW work would completely die.

If you can get your hands on a demo model you can try going into the control panel or audio settings and rying it out maybe, playing the built in music "sample" files and using the built in sound recorder... But if audio recording is important, buy a cheap Delta 44 or something and be golden.
