Possible to re-install the BIOS?

I have this old laptop that i am trying to install an OS on.

The problem is that it is unable to read anything from the installation disks. I have tried g-parted to reformat the partitons to NTFS so that windows can install.

My question is is it possible to simply re-install a clean BIOS - I reckon that is what the problem is....

What OS are you trying to install and where did the install disk come from.

It's possible to flash (reinstall) the BIOS, but I wouldn't call it simple if there is no OS on it. What makes you think it is the BIOS and not something else?

If it's an old notebook, then you probably can't boot off of a USB. And if it can't read the optical drive, you can't boot off of that. Does it have a floppy drive (I remember those - lol)? If so, does that work? Just need something to boot off of to flash the bios. Can you get into your bios?

Actually you can flash a bios without an OS on the drive. You can have a bootable flash install, or you can have a boot disk. When the bios is flashed, it has nothing to do with the hd (well it does, but only later).

It's pretty common for manufacturers to make an executable that can be launched from within Windows, which makes the process very simple. To load a DOS based os on a flash drive you have to have a flash drive that will actually supports it (not all of them do). Then there is the process of actually getting it all set up and working. That is why I say it isn't something I would call "simple".
