Laptop unable to enter sleep or Hibernate

I just recently bought an HP Pavilion dv7 envy laptop with the following specs :

Intel Core i7 720QM
6GB DDR3 RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
2X 500GB Hard Drive
Windows 7 HP 64

I really love it and it's fast however I've been having issues with the sleep mode and I suspect it's a driver issue. When I put my laptop into sleep the screen turns blank and the lights stay on but the system doesn't shut off. I can wait for minutes and it will just hang. No matter what I press it won't come out of it unless I hard reboot.

I'll post a video of what I'm experiencing, any ideas on what generally causes sleep issues ?

I tried hibernate earlier today and it gave me the same results unable to enter hibernate.

It's weird.

And when I restart the computer and enter the desktop no error messages appear.

Where would I find the minidump file ?

Thanks

Try this if you haven't already. Open an elevated command prompt. Type "powercfg -devicequery wake_armed" and press Enter. That might point to the culprit.

I tried that and this is what it gave me : (see attachment)

And here's a quick video demonstrating the problem I am facing.

I also email HP tech support and I really hope I can get to the bottom of this If not then I may consider taking it back to the store for a refund.

If I were you, I would look for a way to make it where the keyboard and mouse can't wake the computer.

Ideally, it would look like this. Notice that it does not list anything.

I'm not 100% sure because on my computer the keyboard and mouse were never set to wake the computer. I'm guessing that some software by HP is allowing them to wake the computer, or it might be a setting in BIOS. You might even be able to do it through device manager.

BTW, I can see at the bottom of this page where you have started two other threads where you claim the same problem occurs, but on a different computer. Did you ever get the issue resolved on the first? What hardware/software have installed on both computers?

Hey

Yea when I owned my eMachines E625 laptop computer I had the same issue. I actually now that I think about it owned the same mouse that I currently use, it's a red logitech wireless usb mouse. I ended up selling that computer though and bought this one.

I contacted HP support yesterday and they responded to me in a quick amount of time. I woke up this morning and found and email from them ! wow talk about service good job HP !:D

This is what the email says :

To start, I would uninstall the drivers for the mouse, as they may be the issue. Just use the touch pad for the time being and see if the problem continues. Remember, you need to restart the PC after uninstalling the drivers to make sure uninstall is complete.

From there, I would try the other steps the HP rep recommended, in the order he recommended them.

Thanks Petey you've been a great help I really appreciate it !

I'm about to uninstall the drivers for my wireless USB logitech mouse, then I'll restart and see If that corrects it. For a few days now I was actually thinking of getting a Wired Razer Gaming mouse. I'll see what happens...

What kind of system do you own ? What are your specs ?

Well I uninstalled and reinstalled my drivers for my mouse, still nothing. I followed the steps in the email reinstalled power management, still nothing. I wanted to update my BIOS still nothing

I replied to the email and said that I'll try and format my system and reinstall with the HP Recovery Discs. If I still experience sleep and hibernate issues then I'm going to take it back to the store for a refund, and might look into getting a desktop computer !

For it to happen the exact same way on two different computers, it almost has to be something you are installing that is causing the issue.

It could be either. Looking back, I don't see where anyone suggested this.

Type msconfig in the start menu search bar and press enter. Go to the start up tab. Uncheck everything except your antivirus software. Restart the computer, and try to see if sleep works.
