Windows 7 usage jumps 22% after RC delivery

Microsoft's delivery of Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) earlier this week boosted use of the new operating system by 22% since Monday, according to data from Web measurement company Net Applications.
Windows 7's overall usage share, however, remains tiny: one third of 1% as of Thursday.

Late Monday night, Microsoft posted Windows 7 RC for public downloadseveral days after making it available to subscribers of the MSDN and TechNet services, which cater to developers and IT professionals, respectively.

The new operating system's share didn't budge Tuesday, remaining at the same 0.27% it had the day before. By Wednesday, Windows 7's share climbed to 0.31%; by Thursday, it was 0.33%.

By comparison, Windows 2000 powered 1.12% of all systems during April, according to Net Applications, while Windows Vista accounted for 23.9%. Windows XP, as it has for years, led all operating systems with a 62.21% share last month.

Microsoft declined to comment on the number of copies of Windows 7 RC that have been downloaded this week, or to characterize the download pace or volume.

xan K, I think XP will be on top for years still simply because the general public does not like tinkering with their pcs anywhere close to how lots of us do here.

And businesses hate to change things too.

I don't think it will change either, my schools pcs all use XP and tbh i don't think they will ever be arsed to change, most business environments have the attitude if it aint broken don't fix it. XP will rain supreme for many years to come and quite rightly to be fair.

If 7 doesnt fix this internet bug and HG bug, i bet usuage will drop by 22%... and XP will still remain king. What a load of bs this glorified RC experience has been so far.

Where do they get these statistics from -- How can they POSSIBLY know what the % usage is.

They never asked ME so that's at least one person they don't have stats for -- and I can think of 100's if not 1000's of others.

And then what about all the "Pirate" copies of the various released of Windows.

Before Windows XP you could provided you had the serial number install Windows on as many computers as you liked (not legally of course) so how can MS possibly know the number of say Windows 2000 users at the moment.


Honestly these stats mean absolutely NOTHING at all.

What they CAN know at any one time is the number of Windows licenses that are currently ACTIVE on their licensing servers -- but even this doesn't tell correctly the number of users

For example I have 2 legally paid for VISTA Ultimate licenses but I haven't currently got them installed on any machine at the moment.

I'd really FIRE any sales director basing management plans on these sorts of stats.

I've been talking to the some IT people that I know. All of them say that they will roll out Win7 in 2010. The fear of M$ not supporting XP out ways the performance of seven. So ether way, the market share will change in a year. As for the consumer market, I think Windows 7 will be XP and Vista users combined.

One way to get a decent understanding of what is being used is to gather stats from a huge website over a long enough period of time. Sure there are people that change what browser and OS is reported to the server and that will change the data, but it's a reliable way to analyze how popular the OS is becoming.

thats because a lot of businesses are cheap-asses
e/g H&R Block (they do ppls taxes) still use old dinosaur pcs w/ windows 2000

XP will be aound for a while, though it already lost live support from M$ (dont quote me, but i read that on one of their partner sites)

may be this is the statics of legal copies of windows(xp.vista ,2000) compared with no of official download of Win 7 rc from M$ statics can never be accurate its just approximation to give better idea!!!

We have seen some stats from MSFT in the Windows 7 Engineering blog about usage during the beta. MSFT does get realtime telemetry data which tells them exactly how many unique copies of each of their OS's are running. If they release those numbers (and they won't, at least not a comparision to the other OS's) it would be a moving target anyway. The data from the stated service by the OP should be taken with a big lump of salt IMHO. But it is interesting none the less.
