XP - W& Will I be able to use more ram?

This may be a stupid question, but I have 4gb in my XP machine. I edit videos for our school and record audio tracks for our choirs using VST's in Cubase 4. I can currently see 3.something in XP. Will W7 allow me to use all 4gbs?

If you have 4GB of RAM then I suggest you use x64 version of W7, It will recognize whole 4GB RAM.


Some mainboards will require you to remap memory in BIOS setting. Even with x64 OS it won't recognize full amount of RAMs. Like my ASUS P5-KPL/1600. Before I enable memory remap, It said '4.0GB RAM Installed (Usable 3.50GB)'

One of the major differences between the x86 and x64 architectures is RAM utilization. the x64 bit allows for MUCH more RAM to be used, whereas x86 architectures only allow for a MAX of around 4 gigs.

There are many more differences, but that is the one that will affect your decision here. I would recommend using the x64 bit for sure, just make sure you can get all the drivers. Seven has a GREAT database, so it is probably not even a problem.

I too have the P4 3.4 gHz and it is not x64 capable. Mine is the 550 chip.

However, ther ARE P4 3.4 gHz that ARE x64 capable such as the 650 chip.

Find out which yours is using CPU-Z. That will tell you which you have. If you are x64 capable with the 650, your video editing will go faster under x64.

I am going to try it, the extra 1gb of ram is important to me. I am assuming a clean install of the 64bit version is the way to go.

I am assuming I will not be able to get full functionally of the 64bit version, with a P4 chip but I will be able to take advantage of the 64 bit ram allocation.

You will get full functionality, or it wont work at all is your P4 is not supported...

If you have the 550 like me, you will not be able to even use the x64 at all. Gotta check man! heh heh

Thanks guys, I checked and I have the 550, so no 64bit. So the 32bit ver will not allow me to take advantage of my 4gb of ram,,,correct?

I also have a laptop with a Core 2 Duo T7700, any benefit to installing the 64bit version on this? I do a lot of the video editing on this while at school.

you can't address it with 32bit. It's over kill

I think it says about 3.2 or 3.4 is available, That extra gb for audio is big, especially running samplers in a sequencer.
