I have a lenovo laptop for the past two months. I am running windows 7 32 bit. A month ago I attempted to run a Malwarebyte scan and he computer froze and it has been a nightmare since. Some of the symptoms are: IE8 and Chrome will not load or work at all. Firefox will work but it freezes many times a day. I cannot uninstall any programs and when I try to install a program I get this message "windows installer service cannot be accessed." I have Spybot but it will not update. I am running AVG 9.0 and the scan is clean. I can update with Malwarebytes but I do not find any problems. I did a system restore with no success. I have no idea what to do please help.

Do you have any restore points available prior to the problem that you could resort to? Or, do you have the ability to restore the system back to the factory image (just be sure to backup any data that you might have saved).

when you search for cmd, don't click on it or hit enter... instead, right click and select "Run as administrator" This will open the command prompt, but as administrator.

I will try your suggestions. I just noticed that in small letters on the bottom right corner of the screen is a message that says
Windows 7
Build 7600
This copy of windows is not genuine.

I have only had this computer for 3 months. What does this mean?

It means it's not activated properly. What output do you get when running slmgr /dlv on that system?

I followed the directions by right clicking command in the accessories menu and then clicked on run as administrator. When I did that the screen froze and I got an error message that the application will not run. I then rebooted it in safe mode and then I was allowed to run the program as administrator but the scan did not find any problems.

As far as the not genuine windows program is concerned and the suggestion, I have no idea what slmgr /dlv is? A little help and I will try it.

You can recover your files using the Win7 DVD Repair console or Repair CD with this method: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/93347-copy-paste-windows-recovery-console.html

Using the DVD/Repair CD, also boot into it to try Startup Repair up to 3 times, then System Restore to choose your earliest Restore Point.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2083-system-repair-disc-create.html

Next: Rightclick on Computer in Start menu, select Properties, scroll down to Activation link and insert the Product Key off of the COA sticker on bottom of laptop. You will likely be referred to an activation robocall which trades a series of numbers to determine the exact Product Key from the batch key on sticker but your activation issue should be cleared up.

If this is not an activation issue, then it is symptomatic of a slipped drive letter. What is the current Win7 drive letter in Computer? Is it correct? If not, download and burn to CD Paragon Rescue CD, Boot the CD, select Normal Mode , then Boot Corrector. Correct drive letters in the system registry.

If this doesn't help, then you need to try a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html?ltr=R. Locate or borrow a Win7 installer, we can you can unlock all versions if necessary to run an Upgrade install of your version from desktop. This is the next best thing to reinstalling, but keeps all your programs, files and settings in place.

If none of these steps help or work, here is how to run Recovery on a Lenovo: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-4VFUDU.html

Just open a command prompt (start > programs > accessories > command prompt), type slmgr /dlv, and press ENTER to run the command. It'll popup a dialog after 30 - 60 seconds giving you all of the activation information about your PC, including why it's failing if that info is available.
