Disabling GSM mode in tethered connections

As titled, I have the problem that when 3G (or UMTS) connection drops down while connecting to the web using a usb modem (tethering), it allows to roam with other providers (either automatically switching, or just upon reconnecting).

So if I do not pay attention each time this happens I have to pay extra costs due to roaming, and I'd like to know how to setup the driver or the connection to use 3G only.

(using fedora linux the graphical interface allows to exclude roaming)

How to do it with win 7 ??

Honestly, I'm not sure. I use a tethered phone for my day to day internet, but I never roam. What phone and provider do you have? Most phones have a setting where you can set it to not allow roaming.

As I mentioned I am using a usb modem (not a phone, but a usb key).
And for the provider I am in Italy, and that is H3G (roaming with TIM in my place), it happens so, as I described.

(There is a lot of talking about limiting balance thresholds for monthly traffic, due to lack of control of this issue, basically, making unaware people wasting money)

Sorry man, not very familiar with the way that providers work over there. If you give me the name and model number of your USB key, I will see what I can find out.

OK...I believe that over here, that usb stick is Vodafone branded. Do you have the software installed for it? If so, there should be somewhere that says "manage connections". Go into that, and see if there is a way to keep from roaming.

Although it is Vodafone, it is not possible to use its software with my provider; the stick can be used as a modem with other providers, without need of its branded software, but its drivers which are correctly installed.

I don't know whether the software allows that, but it'd be useless in my case of use.
That's why I asked about setting the win 7 connection (with fedora, which I mentioned, there is no need to install drivers either and it is feasible at properties-connection level).

with my 3 network usb dongle, i can select to not roam under the tools > network management option? tho mine is prepaid so roaming isnt a problem for me!
