Win7 OEM disk new HD install. What do I need?

Well I got the new HD installed.
No problem Bios recognizing or with W7 install on new HD.... but it will not restore the saved system image from the old HD on to the new HD.
It goes thru the process through image restore and says it was sucessful.
System reboots itself and comes back to the CD installed Win7 on the new disc.
So I reinstall everything from scratch.

If it completes reimaging and won't start up, then you may need to run Startup REpair from CD up to 3 separate times with reboots to write the MBR to the System Partition.

Are you taking the Disc out of the CD/DVD drive when you reboot to the restored image?

Yes.
Win 7 is installed so it is out before trying to restore the image.
If not it just reboots to the CD and wants to install Win7 again.

So I installed that was the only choice.
The choices on "install or repair screen" it either went to install if you choose that or a screen requesting repair. No restore or recovery, memory test or anything.. There was only one choice if you made that selection.
The screen I just found on this page did not appear when I put the Win7 CD in.
I just found this a couple of minutes ago.

That screen never came up on the CD.

Can I try it again with the CD?

I won't click install again. LOL

I'll just close it if it doesn't show.

Where did you get the CD from?

So you don't get this screen when you boot from Windows 7 DVD?

That should be availble in adavanced options for repair/restore if you boot the computer from the DVD.

Well I'll boot from the CD and try it.

The CD is mine. Bought it on line. Legal OEM Pro version.
Same machine just swapping primary drives.

Will look for advanced.
I probably missed it.

That screen but only install button appeared in the middle of screen.
Nothing at the bottom that I remember.....but it might be there.
I'll check it out now.

Thanks for the help Doc and eldinv.

I tried it from the Win7 install CD it wrote restore image back to the original HD.

Tried the repair CD where you can do restore repair mem test etc.
It wrote the image back to the original HD also.
There is no option to chose which drive or where but one.

There is an option that pops up to search for installed Win7 but it only finds the one copy on the old HD.
The repair CD after trying the image restore booted me back into the old HD Win7 where I am now.
That wasn't even an option in the bios earlier.

Going to try something else.

New HD needs to be primary HD, if sata, the cable needs to be connected to the MB on SATA0 (zero) connector. Old HD needs to be secondary HD on system. If IDE HD's, needs to set jumpers for Master (New) & Slave (Old) HD's .

Update: I think I found your MB on NewEgg. I looks like your 1st SATA Drive is connector SATA1, That should be where you connect the NEW Sata HD.

Thanks guys.
It just isn't working.
I even made a new image onto the new drive from the old.
It still only sees the image on the old and wants to restore it to the old.
I tried the Win7 CD as "eldinv" pointed out and the sytem repair disk as in the tutrial I mentioned earlier.
I even tried unplugging the old HD data and power connectors and install image.
BAH!

I'm just going to reload everything on the new one.
I started on the HD install at 10am this morning.

I believe you need a primary formatted partition for it to be detected as a drive.

You can easily convert the partition you made to Primary by rightclicking with Partition Wizard>Modify>Convert Partition to Primary, OK, Apply.

Just reread this whole thread. Did you do what Greg said here about the image partition being primary ?

It is primary.

The new image would never come up as Dynamic disk like the original image. That is probably why it isn't being recognized as a system image.

I quit for now. I've been at this for 12 hours now.
I have patience if not I would have killed it already.

So you have the target HD plugged in with unallocated space (not a partition),

have booted the Win7 DVD REpair console or REpair CD and chosen "Recover Using an Image,"

can browse to the image on the old HD which you KNOW is the old HD because there is another image there?

But it won't find the image you want to use on the same old HD? which you have placed in the same Primary partition?

Correct?

The problem may be that if you have two WindowsImageBackup files in the same root of the drive, it may not see the one you want. Plus they have to be named exactly that for the imaging app to detect them.

Try replacing the old image with the new one since you already know the old one is detected.
