Darn! Something that already annoyed me on my XP system seems to have made it over to Win7 (thanks to EasyTransfer?):

When I open the services.msc utility (e.g. Control Panel => Administrative Tools => Services) it opens showing the "Extended" tab which only shows a big dark blue blob in the upper left corner and nothing else (i.e. not like on my other system, where this tab show "Select an item to view its description" on the left and the list of services on the right).

I always first need to switch to the Standard tab toi actually see anything.

Why is this so? What do I need to fix/adjust/clear to get normal behavior on this?
And why and how this bug make it over from my XP system?

Michael

More than likely this is from doing an upgrade rather than a clean install...

No! You can't! As I said: I had tried the MS Easy Transfer utility, i.e. I used that to transfer my files and settings to an external USB disk, then I built in a new fresh and larger disk into my system, installed Win 7 on it and then restored my files and settings using the Easy Transfer again - all as described on some MS webpage. Easy Transfer was the only connection that the two systems ever had!

Do this, it worked for me with the blue square problem on the Extended tab in services.msc

It also fixes the blank search companion.

Click Start, Run and type:

regsvr32 /i C:\Windows\Srchasst\srchui.dll
regsvr32 jscript
regsvr32 vbscript

If that does not help:
1. Log on to the computer by using an account with administrator permissions.
2. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
3. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
4. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install. This reinstalls the files that Search Companion uses.

I'm not sure why so many people insist on using some wizard to migrate their data, instead of just doing it themselves easily. Do you trust a wizard to know what's important to you? Aside from that, as mentioned, any conflicts could potentially be moved to the new system as well.

If it was me, I'd backup my data myself to the external, wipe the drive, do a fresh install, and then put my data back. You know what you need more than a wizard is able to guess...so don't waste your time with it.

Windows Easy Transfer does a MUCH better job than a manual transfer. It doesn't leave anything out. It gets all the files, music, pictures, etc. and it gets all the deeply nested stuff under application data that most users can't even see, let alone copy, unless they've changed their view settings. In my shop, I use WET probably twice a week to migrate data for users from old machines to new Win 7 machines, and it has yet to give me any problems or miss any data. Let's not belittle a tool that does a fantastic job.

There are plenty of accounts on here and other forums of people having issues with it, me included in a single test run. You ca't possible claim is does a "better" job than doing it manually...you can only hope to claim it does the same job. Nothing is going to be better than manually moving the data, because you are certain to get everything important to you. No tool or wizard is going to do that for me.
