XPS 1647 crashed on first day, now crashes everytime on "Starting Win"

I barely had time to use it !
suddenly while on Facebook I get the BSOD, and now it crashes everytime when the screen "Starting Windows" appears at boot. it wont let me access windows at all ! ... on boot it asks whether to run "Startup Repair" or "Run windows normally", I select "Startup repair" and its starts "repairing" but doesnt succeed in fixing whatever needs to be fixed

.. I also tried other tools like

System restore- Error when I try to launch: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect (0x8007007B)

and Dell DataSafe which should also restore computer to its factory settings- also Error 0x4001100220000100A (instantly when it begins "Formatting your partition...")

what to do?

Hi BaselAS and welcome

If I were you and the computer is still under warranty I would call Dell first. I would hate to give you any advice that voided that.

If for some reason you cannot (or dont want to) call Dell it sounds like a HD problem.

Boot from the Windows 7 DVD and hit shift + F10 while booting. That will get you to a command prompt where you can run a check disk

CHKDSK /R /F:
Run CHKDSK /R /F from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt. Please do this for each hard drive on your system.
When it tells you it can't do it right now - and asks you if you'd like to do it at the next reboot - answer Y (for Yes) and press Enter. Then reboot and let the test run. It may take a while for it to run, but keep an occasional eye on it to see if it generates any errors. See "CHKDSK LogFile" below in order to check the results of the test.

Elevated Command Prompt:
Go to Start and type in "cmd.exe" (without the quotes)
At the top of the Search Box, right click on Cmd.exe and select "Run as administrator"

CHKDSK LogFile:
Go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Expand the Windows logs heading, then select the Application log file entry.
Double click on the Source column header.
Scroll down the list until you find the Chkdsk entry (wininit for Win7) (winlogon for XP).
Copy/paste the results into your next post.

I booted from the DVD and brought up the command prompt with shift+F10.
first weird thing is that it says X:\Sources> .. is that normal ?

I tried to run the command "CHKDSK /R /F" but then it says "The type of the file system is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive. Windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected".

does that mean the Hard disk is completely out of reach?
Im glad and very upset at the same time that such a thing happend on the first day.

As this is a new computer I do strongly advise you contact Dell under the terms of the warranty.
