"2.00 GB (1.00 GB) usable" - I really have 1GB

Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit mysteriously reports my RAM as "Installed memory (RAM) 2.00 GB (1.00 GB) usable". However, I really have 2x512MB DIMMs (I double checked with CPU-Z).

Any idea why W7 thinks I have 2GB? It's an idle question, since it doesn't really matter.

This is an MSI K8MM-V motherboard, Sempron 2500+, VIA K8M800-CE chipset, and a Geforce FX 5200 128MB AGP card. I searched around before posting and some people suggested changing a BIOS setting about "Memory Hole Remap" or similar , but I believe that is for some other chipset or BIOS: I don't have such a setting.

Thanks,
Dan

Dan hi and welcome

could be something as simple as a bios update, or as difficult as the mobo doesnt recognize it.

You can check in msconfig. Type msconig in search go to the advance tabs and look at is what is checked under max memory.

Thanks. Max memory is unchecked in msconfig. The point is that the DIMMS really add up only to 1GB, so there is 1GB of phantom memory from W7's point of view. BIOS is up to date (this is an old mboard). XP did not misreport the RAM as W7 does.
