WindowsMediaPlayer not recognizing my usb flash drive as media device!

Hi all,

I have a simple Kingston USB flash drive that is recognized easily by windows, however it doesn't appear in Windows Media Player's sync list, so I can sync it up with Media player!
I go to Tools/Options/Devices and it's not there. Refreshing doesn't help either. Is there something I gotta do to it, so that Media Player will recognize it as a Portable Media Device??

Hi and welcome to the Forum
If your stick shows up as a seperate drive in Windows explorer then you should see something like this in the navigation pane of WMP.

What exactly do you see in your nav pane?

ps. i'm talking about the Kingston F drive that you see in my computer.

What's actually on the USB drive? In WE right click on the drive and click "Properties" What file system is it? If its FAT32 then click the "Tools" tab and click the "Error checking" See if that finds anything!

there's just music on the stick (mp3 files)
It's a brand new stick. I just did error checking however, nothing was found...

so I take it that wmp should recognize flash drives and show them in the pane? I have a couple of other memory sticks as well. Tried them all nothing was shown!

Yes they should show. Just a thought. Are you logged on as an administrator? Try another USB connection on your PC!

done! no luck. also tried my laptop with all my memory sticks. still no luck! that's why I thought maybe usb sticks are not intrinsically recognized as portable media devices??
i so badly want this to work...sick of drag&drop the mp3 files and deal with duplicates and stuff instead of simply using my playlists to sync!

So are you now saying that you have tried different USB sticks in two different PC's and none of them work? If yes have you by any chance got the same copy of Windows 7 on both machines?

no on the other machines I'm running XP,but it shouldn't matter right? since it's basically a wmp issue as like I said windows recognizes them

Well I'm at a loss I'm afraid. I've just taken a brand new Sony 4Gb stick out of the packagng, plugged it in to my PC and it hows up on WMP. There's nothing on the stick of course but it shows!
Time for some real experts to have a go I think!
I shall keep watching this thread to see what the eventual outcome is!

sorry I didn't see the pop up on the XP. Correction: it works with XP no problem! the wmp sync wizard pops up but no luck on 7

Ah so I think we can assume we have a Win 7 specific problem. I wonder if a sfc scannow would help. See here:

Just might be worth a try! Takes a bit of time so you might want to hang on to see if others agree with this approach! Have PM'd a man who might be able to help!

Although not satisfactory as a fix ,it is possible to go to the root folders for the albums you are trying to sync
to your stick, right click and select send to and then select the F drive (if it appears!)

I barely copy the entire album. all my songs are playlist files, hence reason why I'm dying to get this sync to work, so even if I have one song in different playlists, it wouldn't copy the file over again and again...would just point to one source.

guess there was nothing wrong with the file system:

C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

what would you recommend? (one that has a decent sync functionality?)
