Administrator without administrator privileges?

I have an administrator account on my laptop, but when I display its properties it says I am a standard user and will not let me change the account type. How can I change my account type to administrator.

That does say Administrator right under your name. If you're talking about that dot in the standard user, that's the only thing you can change it to.

Not sure why it won't let you install. Is that your only account?

You could try creating a new admin account and see if that helps.

Option 3 worked -- thanks!

It had me as a member of both "administrator" and "homeuser" groups. When I selected the administrator radio button, "homeuser" was removed. It seems that if you are a member of more than one group, you get the lowest privileges.

What is the homeuser group and any idea how I got into it?

It lists various groups like power user, etc., but does not mention "homeuser."

Can one define their own group definitions, specifying the privileges the group members have?

I installed windows 7 a few months ago -- clean install with 64 bit, and don't recall defining any group called "homeuser."

I don't know that much about groups so I couldn't answer that for you, but someone will come along and explain it when they see it.

Did you attempt to run the application you are trying to install using right-click > "Run as Admin"?

Right click My Computer and choose properties. You should see security (upper left). I think that is what your looking for.
