Technet Plus changed and Reduced number of Keys to 5

will the keys expire after the subscription expires?

This issue has been dealt with BTW -- No the keys are valid INDEFINTELY including all updates etc etc.

No worries on that score.

This seems to be true as of today, who knows about tomorrow. There is a lot of different info floating around, including replies from the TechNet people.

My plan, do nothing, wait, and see where things are at when the time comes to renew my 'script.

As Microsoft has not kept their end of the bargain I have sent them an email to cancel my subscription and request a full refund as they have broken a contract or I will have to take legal action.

I have now received an email back saying that they will refund me in full as I am not happy.

This shows me that they have broken the contract, if only everybody would take them on, but obviously that is not going to happen.

Hi there
Sorry to belabour this point -- but it's NOT the change per se that is the problem BUT THEY CHANGED THE CONDITIONS AFTER I'D SIGNED THE DEAL.

That's what is WRONG WRONG WRONG.

Is there anything in that deal that you originally signed that told you exactly how many keys you got and how many activations?

Existing suscribers should be left on the OLD system until their subscription runs out --simple --end of story.
It's what most companies would do, but the situations are different here. They are changing this to slow down piracy and to curb abuse of the program. Had they left all of the original members with all of their keys, these people would have flocked to retrieve all of them and in all honesty...potentially made the situation even worse.

I can imagine what would happen to me if I said I'll provide 25 of your staff with Lunch every day for 7 USD a day each. A month later I tell the company -- (or in fact I DON'T tell the company) I just tell the 13th person who comes in for Lunch --sorry we've just changed the conditions to only giving Lunch for 12 people.
...

this is just not cricket - has anybody received any notification from m$ about the recent changes?

what's to stop them from making more changes any time they want to in the future? taken to the extreme, maybe there's something hidden in the 7 eula that says microsoft can just 'turn you off' if they feel like it.

it's also a shame that there's nothing we can do about it, except rant here - and i'm teed off that i didn't harvest my keys earlier - i'd only used two 7 keys.

and such a draconian reduction too! 10 -> 2 pff scumbags and sleazeballs indeed

this could lead to more piracy, not less...

I have a sub that I did not renew that expired on 6 August all thos keys are still working. The new sub? Who knows?

As previous posters have said it is the fact that they are just walking all over us that is getting me. Why should we allow it? I really do not want to, have no intention, have had not intention and will never 'steal' their products. Therefore why should they alter a contract that I have enterered into with them? If I did that they would bring the full force down on me.

Best advice....read the Eula. When you purchase software, you don't "own it". You have been granted a license to "use" it. Very different concepts.

Sadly this is true. Most if not all products you buy from MS will state that you do not 'own' it. You just have the rights to 'use' it.

So I called TechNet myself. And what I discovered is that, yes, Microsoft did just change the terms of the TechNet Standard and Pro subscriptions. For the Standard subscription, Microsoft is only providing two product keys for Office 2007, Office 2010, Windows XP, and Windows 7. For Professional, it's five; both were previously ten. However, subscribers can request additional keys via email. And I verified with Microsoft that each product key is still good for ten activations.

The TechNet Standard subscription is still an excellent deal, of course, and I should once again point out that this product is for evaluation purposes only, not so you can inexpensively install Windows 7 on every PC in the neighborhood. But I do understand why existing subscribers are upset that Microsoft quietly changed the terms of the subscription. It was kind of a lousy thing to do.

my boldening - needs further investigation...

Doesn't make him right though. I'm not saying he is wrong, but I think everyone should just wait to see what happens before anything.

What I'm curious about is why has no one at SF that has a TechNet Subscription tried contacting MS themselves to see if it is true or false?

Hi there
probably because we're all to busy on the W7 Forums.

Actually its not that easy to contact MS especially in Europe -- they will acknowlege your email and then you just have to wait until they reply --could take a WEEK judging by the volume of mail this stuff has generated alone.

My problem ALSO with the new system is that some products I got keys for I don't know what the key is if I have to re-install since I left all the keys on the MS site.

I should have copied the keys to my local hard drive but I didn't expect in normal circumstances to be in this situation.

All my products have been reset to KEYS CLAIMED 0 / 5 so presumably I'd have to download products again if needed and claim new keys.

Cheers

Jimbo

Yes, actually I do believe they would comment on it. They have no reason to hide it if they are legally allowed to make such a change. Based on what I know, they ARE legally allowed to make this change.

Never hurts to try and contact them to see whats going on. :)
