Help with the quality of video picture Please.

Hi,if anybody knows what the blotchy background is on all my videos when I play them ,I would be grateful if you could help me fix it ,or tell me what it is,as it is very annoying,it does not show up on anything else ,except when I play a movie .

Hi Jim,

I'm not sure what you mean, nor can I see anything on your images. Can you highlight what you mean?

In the meantime, check your graphic settings. I know that you have ATI graphics whereas I have NVidia, but you should have similar settings available.

Hi ,Thanks for the reply,the thing I am talking about is the brown area on the left in the second picture and the the area below the face of the woman in the first picture.It is on every movie I download or play from the DVD drive,I have the latest drivers for my cards and I don't have the same utility program as your Nvidea to change all the settings that you have,unfortunately,it is all "blotchy and wavey and squares " is the only way I can describe it ,but if you say that you cannot see it and it is all over my screen in all the shadows and the backround of all my movies ,I dont know.

I am going to connect my flatscreen tv to the PC,and see if it the same on that screen.

Hi Jim,

Now that you've mentioned what you are seeing, I've had another look and can see what you mean.

It is possible that it is a driver issue, in which case there is nothing that I can think of except to let AMD know about it and hope that it is corrected in a subsequent driver/patch.

When you say play a movie, do you mean a DVD, AVI, MPEG??

Dvd ,avi any movie.

I have just taken out my digital cable and gone back to analogue to see if there was any change ,there wasn't, so I think that rules out a bad digital cable, so I will put it back to digital later.

Thanks Dwarf I am just trying to rule out things one at a time.I am beginning to think that it is the monitor because it has been like this for a good while now, and I have gone through a lot of new drivers from ATI since I noticed it and none of them have ever fixed it,so as I said I am going to swap over to the flat screen to see if there is any change,and if there is it will tell us a lot.

This looks like pixelation, what size screen you viewing it on?

If the video was created at say 800x600 and you view it at say 1920x1080 you will get this effect (pixelation).

If you right click the file and properties it will give you this info!!

Just hooked up the flat screen 32 inch and the exact same thing happens, except it looks worse because it is bigger, so that means, it is not the monitor,it is not the lead,it is not digital versus analogue,I have tried it with one card ,and I have tried it with the cards crossfired and there is no difference,so this is bringing me back to the cards,or the resolutions as Anthony says or the drivers.

Is that your native screen resolution?

If it is and you play a video file that is 800x600 @ full screen (1680x1050) you lose the video quality.

Another way to get better video output is to use ffdshow (video codec), but its a lot of messing about, unless you know what your doing.

Ok I have changed the resolution to all the different ones available ,and played a different movie than I have in the picture in my first post ,and it is exactly the same,
so it doesn't look like it is the resolution,I have just played one of the movies on my old laptop which has an integrated card on it ,and it was perfect,so now I am really getting baffled as to why it would play on the old, and be so bad on the new and much better specs,I am determined to fix this now ,so any ideas from all would be great,and there will be rep as normal to all that help.

Man, theres nothing wrong with your hardware, its the video file thats crap!! :huh:

Download an HDef file 1920x1080p and play it on your 32" it will look fine.

I dont know how else to explain it to you, jfar....

Hi Jim,

I'm still leaning towards it being a driver issue. If it was a pixellation issue, as was suggested by Anthony, then the defect would be noticeable over the whole image and not just in specific areas.



Are you using the 64-bit or 32-bit version of W7? Feedback and release notes also available at the links given below.

What's the screen res on your laptop? And are you using the exact same software/player settings as the desktop?

Sorry had to go out for a while.On the laptop, I just played the movie on Windows media player, in windows 7100,the res on the laptop is 1280 x800.

I uninstalled all my graphics drivers, and reinstalled the latest ATI 9.4 drivers,and it is still the same.
