Email hiding on my computer somewhere... but where?

This is a nightmare! My husband installed windows 7 a few days ago (we had vista which had a couple of issues and he decided to fork out $150 and install windows 7). Our email contact info can still be found, but we can't get email.

The worst thing about it is you can hear the sound of the email coming in every time you get on the computer... it's coming in, but we can't find it. It's hiding somewhere. I'ts receiving all our email, but it's invisible. So if I want to manage my email by internet, I can't... it has already been "received" by my computer. Any gurus out there with ideas? I'm sure everyone wonders why I'm not responding to email since I head some volunteer work with our local PTA and MOMS club.

We are also having issues with printing... a post for another time.

I am no guru :) but...

what email client are you using? (e.g. Microsoft Outlook, Online such as AOL, Google Mail, Hotmail)

I think it's Windows Mail. Before the install of windows 7, I would open our email program by clicking an icon on the start menu. I would usually just keep it open and it would periodically check for new messages (makes a little 2 tone sound when it receives email). I keep hearing the sound whenever I'm on the computer. And the place I can check for email online is not receiving email... because it's all coming into my computer, although invisible. If I went to check my email at comcast.net right now, I might have an email or 2 there... but if my computer does an autocheck, the "new" email disappears. This all probably sounds very confusing... I agree, IT IS! It's a bit mind boggling that even if I reboot, that old program seems to be opening itself (otherwise I could just get all new mail online).

My husband did reinstall Windows 7 last night... he has spent hours (maybe 8 give or take a couple) trying to get the bugs worked out. Thanks for whatever helpful info you may have. I'll update if we get it figured out. Husband seems to think if we can find the original Dell Windows Vista disk, this may be helpful...

is there a setting in your email program to leave mail on the server, at least this would allow you to do what you want till you find the missing emails.

EDIT: this link is for XP but it seems you can find and change where the emails are stored quite easily from Live Mail settings http://malektips.com/windows-live-mail-message-store-folder.html

C:\Users\YOURUSENAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail seems to be where it lives.

Hi! Sahmof4, welcome to W7F :)

C:\Users\YOURUSENAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail seems to be where it lives.
That's where it is located on mine too.

Sahmof4 have you tried going to:

  • Start
  • All Programs
  • Windows Live
  • Windows Live Mail
When you click on Windows Live Mail what do you see?

If you installed Windows 7, it doesn't come with an email program. If you want to use a program that resides on your computer you need to download and install one. "Windows Mail" came with Vista but is not available as a download. The only free Microsoft download is "Windows Live Mail". The path to the storage folder as shown above is correct but to see email files themselves in Windows Explorer you have to show hidden files. Of course that path does not exist if you did not download and install Windows Live Mail. If you did install it and you open it and "hear" the mail comming in, then maybe you just need to look at the "drop down" sub folders of the left pane items in WLM.

Just a couple of quick questions

Where are you Looking for the email???

Can you open the email client?? when you click on the shortcut what happens?

Do you have Microsoft office on the system?

It may be that the mail is being received as you think and just being stored somewhere different that you arent aware of.

Thanks so much! My problem is now fixed...

This got me on the right track. I tried the Import Mail Trouble shooter... it didn't find any problems, but it did suggest other troubleshooting options. This finally lead me to the following web address: Import your e-mail, contacts, and calendar into Windows Live Mail
By following these instructions, I was able to get all our mail. This was such a relief. My husband said he had done this before and it hadn't worked... so maybe it was the re-install of Window 7 that changed something.

Anyway, thanks to all of you who kindly tried to help with my problem. I am very grateful... and very happy that there was a good resolution. Thanks all!

Printer is now working... a microsoft person helped me on the phone and their remote easy assist (you share control of your computer). I guess my husband could have figured that one out... we had to put the info about our printers in again... guess it wasn't saved after the upgrade. Thanks again!
