Thanks for the good read. If Mac computers tie the hands of the owner using this UEFI well this is a Mac problem and we use Windows 7. That's probably one of the reasons there aren't many Macs. I think the rest of the computer world are smarter than that.

The BIOS issue isn't that big for me other than that some seem much longer than others. I really can't wait for SSDs to come down in price. I need a lot of storage, so the drives are too pricey for me at the moment.

you can still use an affordable ssd for your os and smaller programs, and keep your existing hdd for data and big programs...

that's my plan, i'm still saving up...

Well my main thing is I want the SSD for my most important data, since it should be more reliable than a mechanical drive.

Nice video mickey, hopefully this will be a FW upgrade.

Looks like it will need a special way to get in so you can change settings, goes by too fast.
Which is a problem I wish I had...

The upgrade will spell the end for the 25-year-old PC start-up software known as Bios that initializes a machine so its operating system can get going.
The code was not intended to live nearly this long, and adapting it to modern PCs is one reason they take as long as they do to warm up.
Bios' replacement, known as UEFI, will predominate in new PCs by 2011.
The acronym stands for Unified Extensible Firmware Interface and is designed to be more flexible than its venerable predecessor.

The motherboard company MSI is the first company to wholly to adopt UEFI, with it coming on all Sandy bridge boards. It is only expected to ship beginning of next year, though.

The Asus UEFI utility has been by previewed by a Swiss tech site and the utility looks, in my opinion...... awesome!

The downside is that the actual video, not the report (thanks to Google Translate) is in Swedish. So if there are any Swedes on this forum, I would love to know whats in the vid.

Having read through the whole thread... I sorta see madtownidiot's point. If for whatever reason (hardware failure, malware, PEBKAC...) the UEFI gets corrupted, I really hope there's a fallback somewhere kinda like the BIOS now so you won't be totally screwed. You'd just stick a bootable disc/usb and initiate repairs like we already do for hdds with problems. Or maybe have the ability to revert any UEFI configuration changes to the last known good one.
