You need to uninstall all old drivers, and then reinstall.

This usually works; Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

Just a heads up, the latest version of Driver Sweeper is no longer hosted at Guru3D.

Get the latest from the developers site:
    Phyxion.net - Driver Sweeper

Remove ATI Catalyst Install Manager via Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features

Reboot into safe mode, run driver sweeper, select analyze/clean the ATI entries only.

Boot normally and re-install the proper drivers.

The issue occurs because the WHQL drivers via Windows Update don't work with the installed version of an older Catalyst Control Center. It's better to download video drivers separately and not use WU for this reason.

Not surprised you're having problems with the driver from AMD as from what I can find about your laptop, it uses switchable graphics. That means it uses the Intel graphics for low power use and only uses the AMD graphics where it is needed (games, etc). Also from the release notes for the driver from AMD,

    AMD Catalyst

The following notebooks are not compatible with this release:

    • Any notebook launched after this driver release
    • Switchable Graphics enabled notebooks using Intel® chipsets.
    • Toshiba® notebooks (please contact the notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks)
    • Sony® VAIO® notebooks (please contact the notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks)
    • Panasonic® notebooks (please contact the notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks)
which basically means you can only use the driver(s) provided by Acer as they have been modded to work with the switchable graphics. It also requires having the driver for both installed for either to work properly.
