Graphics Card Question

I'd do some research on the cards and their capabilities. FWIW, IIRC, ATI was making the 4830 to compete with the 9800GT....

You'll need to find a good review site and figure out the differences.

My personal opinion - nVidia FTW :P But I am biased, I know....

Right, Chappy - I was just saying that the comparison of the 1900 and the 9800 is not a truly fair comparison....

the x1900GT is comparable to a nvidia 7900GT. as seen here:

not even close to running with current 2 gens of gfx cards from either manufacturer.

Not to flame, however let's put it this way. You are trying to say each successive generation of graphics card is better than the last generation. That is what I thought as well. Only problem is when I look at x1950 prices, it was about 200 to 300. I thought, "no way!" It's a last-gen card! My HD2400 should beat it's .... in benchmarks (it's the next generation, iteration, and therefore an improvement and refinement).

Sadly, no. Product ranges overlap each other. I inquired at the Wilder Security Forums and the answer I posted above is based off another person's answer.

Just look at the HD2400 and x1950. No comparison, price-wise. Google Shopping lists the HD2400 at around 50 to 100 bucks.

Back to the original question. x1900GT and a 9800GT.

Well, I would go with the 9800 GT; it uses DX10 and SM4.0. The x1900GT on the other hand draws in DX9 and SM3.0. It's always nice to future proof yourself. As my original post stated, the x1950, an upgraded x1900, is ~HD3760. The 3 series was made to compete with the 9 series. So let's work backwards. We can easily match the 3870x2 with the 9800GX2. The 3870 with the 9800GT.

Thus, x1900GT > 9800 GT

Correct - even when the 9000 series of nVidias were out, the 8800GTX was still the monster card to have - for the most part.

Now, I'll bet even money that hte 4870 will blow the pants off that x1900, jsut as I know my GTX260 will outperform most 9800 series cards as well.
