certain files fail to copy from cd to desktop harddrive... help pls

Few years ago i stored some music/video files on blank discs.

Just recently i decided to copy the music files from those cds to my hard drive.

When i insert the cd into the computer, the procedure begins normally. some albums are copied to my desktop without a problem. The noise is normal when the cd drive goes to work.

But then a certain album might give problems. The cd drive will copy each track but then it will struggle to copy a certain file. The noise from the cd drive goes silent all of a sudden. Then there is no progress and applications might freeze if i try to use them. To cancel this i have to eject from the cd drive.

Anyone know whats going on here and how i can copy all the media files from the cds to my pc please?

The cds are not scratched. The files were saved to dvd+r discs.

I can only think of a dirty disk (finger prints?). Wash it with detergent and cotton cloth making movements from inside to the edge.

Also, gently clean the cd/dvd reader with any recognized cleaner kit.
Meanwhile, can you try to copy that pesky folder or file on another computer? I know it "sounds strange" but it sometimes works for me.

Will those music files on the CD play directly from the CD. If not then they may be corrupted, but if they do then they should copy onto your hard drive.

Open the DVD drive in Computer & see if all the files show up.

How long does data stored on CDs/DVDs last? Do they deteriorate over time? See the best answer here How long do DVD discs last? Do they deteriorate over time? - [Solved] - Storage

You didn't mention how many years old your recordings are but sure depending on many factors you may not expect data to hold more than a year or two.( We always speak of the worst case :)) If you want to store data on optical media for a long time then it will be wiser to copy that data to a new set of optical media every year.

OK fine and that advice will keep you in good stead for future. ( But think of it. Who uses optical media these days?)

What do you do now with the discs that surely have deteriorated?

Try ISObuster which is touted to be the best to retrieve the data from CDs and DVDs. IsoBuster: Recover file data from CD, DVD, BD, Hard Drive, USB, SD, Floppy, etc.

(With the downloaded version you can do data recovery from all optical media without any limitation. You have to convert it to PRO version paying a licence fee only if you want to recover data from other media like HDDs , Flash drives etc,.)

"If you install IsoBuster and want to make use of the free functionality only, click the "Free Functionality" button when prompted." Recover, Retrieve & Restore Data & Files - IsoBuster License Models

I am playing the music files now from the cd. Seems to be playing fine. Even the 2 files that did not get copied to my hard drive.

And all the folders show up without any problem.

i been listening to the cd for about 5 to 10 minutes now. Had no problem. I played the album with the file that did not get copied and it played fine.

Then i decided to play a different album then the problem started. It didnt load up the folder.

I dont think something is corrupt. But i might be wrong.

The drive just dont function now until i eject the cd.

Do you have another CD player or even a DVD video player to try the CDs on. If they play properly on one of those then the fault may be in your computers CD player.

If they don't play properly on either of those then the CDs are the problem, assuming of course they were recorded properly & are clean.
