    is my system failing?

ok so i keep getting dick read error.

i have replaced my C drive and started over with a complete clean install of windows 7. the new drive was fully formatted back to default specs.

tried another new hard drive and same result.

so thats 3 drives, all treat the same but still i get start up issues.

could it be the hard drive connectors on the MOBO that are now failing.

keeping in mind this is the first 'real' upgrade since it was purchased around 5-6 years ago.

Have you tried replacing the hard drive controller itself or is it built-in to the motherboard? It's sounding like that might be your problem.

One other thing to try might be to reset the BIOS to default settings. Aside from that, though, it does sound to me like a controller problem.

You list WDC WD2500JS-75NCB3 (232 GB) twice, do you have two of them? Are you using a RAID array?

If you have two and want to use one just for backup, remove the second one when installing Windows 7, install normally then reconnect and format the backup drive.

Can you also give us the exact error message you are getting?

Both cable and controller failures cannot be discarded, if you have a chance to try the drive(s) in another computer you could check that.

the controllers are built in to the MOBO :/

and yes there were two however the original C drive was removed and replaced with the spare

Also, are you using one or 2 drives at once?
