You can't really test the motherboard without specialized tools.
You can test the RAM with Memtest86+
Burn it to a disk and boot from that disk, just like you have tried to do with the Windows disk.
Run it for 6 or 8 passes, which will take hours---let it run overnight while you sleep.

Make sure no other HD's are plugged in.
Run the Seatools Extended test. Then run Disk Check from the Win7 DVD System Recovery Options Command Line. That will clear your HD.
You can then use the Seatools CD function to Quick Wipe HD. This should force the Win7 DVD to autostart. Make sure the DVD is clean and unscratched. If there is any question about DVD burn another from latest official ISO, or write to flash stick using tool given here: Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
Then run Memtest86.
Once the hardware is cleared we will have other steps for you.

I just wanted to update you all as you have all been so fantastic.
I dont want you to think I gave up but even after trying all your advice I was so stressed with the stupid HDD and the fatal message BOOTMRG is missing that I spent my hard earned on a new HDD.
I just fitted it and YAY !!!!!!!!!! the 64 bit version of Windows is now loading....WOOT WOOT !!!!!!!!
I'm just waiting for some SATA cables to arrive to hook up the offending HD (the one with BOOTMRG message) and I will try see what is wrong. That drive was quite simply stuck at the very first screen unable to load from DVD or anything. If I can fix it I will use it just for a storage disk.

When the cables arrive I will follow those instructions. I dident realise the new Samsung HD dident come with cables so I hooked it up to the existing cables and left the seagate one in place so it would be easier to hook it up.
Really I'm too stubborn to believe that HDD is completely dead.

When you connect the old HD, try to browse in to see if the data is intact and back it up.
Then reboot the computer, tap the one-time Boot Menu key given on first boot screen, try to boot the old HD again.
If it won't boot I would wipe the old HD from Win7 on the new HD using DISKPART At PC Startup.
Then repartition in Disk Mgmt.
