I do exactly that, and after I press enter on the clean command, it says immediately diskpart succeeded in cleaning the disk - surely it should take at least an hour to clean a 750gb drive??

It takes a second or two.
The "clean all" command would take hours, but it is needed only if you are highly paranoid and trying to wipe a drive so that all info is unrecoverable--like when giving a drive away or selling it to someone.
You should have a clean drive.
If you'd feel better about it, do a clean all instead. Highly unlikely you would have a different result.
Reattempt your install.

I have now cleaned my whole drive, and used the windows home premium disk, and everything is dandy. Do you know, however, if the anytime upgrade will work without hitch?

You have a WIn7 Professional key? Is it Anytime Upgrade key or retail key - Upgrade or full?
Keep in mind that almost no one needs the few expensive extra features in Professional and otherwise it is the exact same OS as Home Premium. Make sure you need this or else get the value of your Home Premium license which will be lost during the time it is qualifying for Professional upgrade: Compare Windows 7 Editions - Windows 7 Forums
To proceed save a Win7 backup image of Home Premium so you never have to reinstall it again and have a path back: Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup
Then type Anytime in Start Search box, put in the Professional key to unlock its features. Windows Anytime Upgrade - How to - Windows 7 Forums

Okay, I have it up and running again now!!!
but just if anyone has alien experience, will they install windows off a normal disk, or does it have to be alien branded?

Like most any OEM Reinstallation DVD all that it gives you extra is the Dell/Alienware branding on the Properties page and baked-in activation using OEM-SLP.
Using a retail installer requires using the Product Key on COA sticker which changes to OEM-COA activation in MS Servers. Be sure to back up the Product Key in case the COA sticker becomes unreadable.
