    How to make new SSD boot drive and still keep HDD in dual port laptop


    Hi people,
    I am really sorry if someone has already covered this but I am new to this forum.
    I have and HP Envy 17-2000, which has two ports for harddisks or SSDs (or any combination of).
    The new SSD is a Samsung 840 (120GB) and the existing HHD uses 90GB.
    I used the Samsung cloning software to copy all C drive information from the HDD to the SSD.
    See the image for Disk Management information.
    PROBLEM: I cannot work out how to make the new SSD the Boot Disk.
    After (hopefully) solving the issue, I will leave all programs on the SSD and use the original HDD only for data and back-up.

    My guess would be that the boot loader info is in the small partition at the beginning of the hard drive -- which would not get migrated simply by copying the contents of "C:" to the SSD.

    There are various ways to fix this, but if you'd rather not mess around with the command line, NeoSmart Technologies makes a free app known as EasyBCD. If you download and install that, it has an option to "migrate" the boot loader files to your partition of choice. That will allow you to insert those files into the SSD partition -- which should then make it bootable.

    You need to transfer the OS by one of these methods: SSD - Install and transfer the Operating System

    Once its transferred, unplug the source HD making sure SSD is not set to boot first.

    If it won't boot, confirm System Reserved partition or C holds is Partition Marked as Active (Method Two)
    then run Startup Repair - Run up to 3 Separate Times to repair or rewrite the boot files.

    If this fails, keep the HD unplugged and do a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7, same steps for retail.

    I don't know why you have that ugly Win2000 graphics. In Control Panel>Personalize select an Aero theme, perhaps one with a nice background slideshow. You can have a slideshow with all 120 of the Win7 national edition backgrounds from 120 Original Windows 7 High Resolution Scenery Regional Wallpapers Free Download » My Digital Life
