Repair Install Fails - Disks not properly recognized?

I'm trying to do a Repair Install following this tutorial. When I run Install I get this message: "Windows could not retrieve information about the disks on this computer."

I googled around and found that I should go to services.msc, find Virtual Disk, set it on Automatic (although some posters say set it on Manual), start the service and reboot. This did not help, on either automatic or manual.

The followup suggestion was to go to devmgmt.msc, expand the disk drives, double-click on the drive, choose volumes and, if no volumes are listed, click "populate." But when I do that I get the message, "Volume information for this disk cannot be found." I have three hard drives in this computer and they all return that message.

What should I do?

May or may not be relevant, so please bear with me :)

What is the SATA Operation Mode in BIOS set to?
Is your OS disk connected to the first SATA port on motherboard?

Gregrocker - When I click on Disk Management in Computer Management all I see is, "Unable to connect to Virtual Disk Service." I went into services and saw I'd left Virtual Disk on manual and it wasn't running so I started it, but that didn't help.

It sounds like you're heavily corrupted. Rescue your files now, if necessary using Copy and Paste in Windows REcovery console.

Run a full scan with Malwarebytes and AdwCleaner to see if heavy infection might be causing the corruption.

Then if you already tried repairing System files using System File Checker and they won't repair enough to even run the Repair Install, I'd invest my time now in doing a perfect Clean Reinstall. In the future have a Win7 backup image so you don't need to do a full reinstall.
