Well, I just tried another clean install, this time deleting the windows xp partition, and it failed once again. this time resulting in another error message followed by a BSOD. Now my XP is gone too.

well i have just finished burning Gparted to a dvd. I'll keep you posted.
Your University provided the DVD being used here? That eliminates ISO and burn. Check its condition anyway.
This is a disk read error. I think you should extract the files to Vista desktop and try to run Setup to test if it might be OD or laser. You say Vista installer does the same. Can you try another OD?
Check your BIOS settings. Have you set SATA controller to AHCI?
Plug in your ethernet and select "Keep me connected to the internet during installation"
The installer is driver-complete, but to be absolutely sure you should probably insert drivers into the installer on the Custom drive-map screen.
XP formatting could conflict (different partition table). Use DBAN to zero out the HD and try again booting from installer, Custom>Advanced tools>Format drive.

My sata is set on IDE, should it be ICHI?
I will try plugging in the internet.
I haven't installed any drivers at all on my computer because it is a new build. Could that be the problem.
I am using GPart right as I type.
Set to AHCI.
You can try putting SATA controller drivers into installer, just to be sure.
Again this is a file read error, although it could be rejecting XP formatting up front.
We need to focus on the Optical Drive first. Can you switch it out and try another? And/or extract files to Vista/XP desktop and try to run to see if that works? If from XP, test install to second Win7-formatted partition.
Wish you had made an image of your old Win7 as that could be reimaged on HD now.
Greg, I am getting into the installer perfectly fine. the error occurs after the Copying files step, at the "expanding files". This is all after selecting language, partition, etc. etc. etc.
and the menu is
Sata operation mode:
IDE
Raid
AHCI
disabled
