Remote Desktop from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows XP
Is it possible?
I'm doing it from my Windows 7 Home Premium x64 to XP Pro. What sucks is when I replace the XP box with Windows 7 I'll have to put Professional on it to keep doing it. That or go third party with something like VNC. As mentioned you can't remote into Home Premium.
But, its not XP Pro.
Its standard XP SP2. I am on my Windows 7 Home Premium and want to connect to me desktop which runs Windows XP SP2.
Possible?
On the XP PC, right click the My Computer Icon, select properties, and go to the Remote tab. Now look and see if there is a Remote Desktop section. If there is, put a check mark in the box and give it a try.
Hi there
You can RDP to XP Pro (or W2K3 server) or even W2K if you want from ANY Windows edition.
What is an irritant that you CANNOT RDP TO a W7 box unless its W7 Pro or higher.
I'm running a Virtual W2K3 server -- no prob accessing it from the Internet via RDP from a W7 client --even over the Internet in a different country.
Just ensure the remote machine allows remote access and port 3389 is open if you are accessing your remote from the internet. You'll need to port forward port 3389 via the settings on your router to the actual IP address on your local LAN of the machine you want to connect to ---ensure the firewall allows it too.

Hi there
This teamviewer option ALWAYS crops up but remember some people are in workplaces where this is NOT a feasable option -- site blocked / port not open etc etc.
While its a good solution for a lot of people using their OWN computers this type of solution isn't available to a lot of people using computers (whether laptops or fixed workstations) provided by their work.
BTW the tip for opening up XP Home to allow RDP is a good one.
I still think W7 should allow ANY edition to be able to access it via RDP -- 100% connectivity is more and more important and with tablets and smart phones eating away at the traditional PC market it seeems to me MS has missed the boat here.
