nathan sounds like your computer not able to get an IP Address from your router, it then sets the ip address 169.254.21.102, usually the default subnet for home networks is something like 192.168.1.x or 192.168.0.x , add to the fact you have no gateway setup, means you will most definantly have no access to the internet. here is things you can do to try to resolve this:

1) do you have firewall installed? what protection software you use? this includes security solutions or firewalls. if you do, remove it by doing uninstall, use windows firewall instead if you want a firewall, and other solutions for anti-virus such as Avast/Avira which are free anyway.
2) Does it help if you use static IP instead of DHCP? try seting your IP address to something like 192.168.1.120, with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and a gateway of 192.168.1.1 ( which is usually the default settings for most routers, I'm asuming you have a router ). if there is another PC connected, you can try and check what is your network like, by typing "ipconfig /all" . note down the IP address of other PCs, use the same first 3 numbers and the last one put something uniqe to your network, for example if computer B has 192.168.1.102 try 192.168.1.120. once your done try to ping computer B or 74.125.87.104 to test conectivity.

Solution

I found a solution to this problem, it is the driver. I searched for 4 days to find a driver that worked and finally it is version 11.1.1.22. If you can roll back your driver by uninstalling your old driver I quarantee this driver will solve your wireless issue.

Hmmm,

I have the same adapter and "solved" the issue with a new router. I had tried older drivers (including 11.1.1.22) with no luck. If you have the right adapter/driver/router combination it will work fine but my Linksys WRT110 just palin would not play with Win 7 and my 4965AGN. I installed a Netgear WNDR3770 and my connection has been solid for 24 hours.

YMMV

Hy everyone,

I have an interesting and persisting 'limited connectivity' problem in Windows 7. Some history:

- preinstalled Windows 7 on Dell Studio 1557 I7 processor
- in the first 10 days everything was perfect - connecting to internet at the job and at home (wirelessly and by wire)
- suddenly I can not get to internet at home wirelessly (Linksys WRT54G) - all other three options (at home by wire, on the job both wireless and wired still works perfectly)

- yes, I have to point out that other computers in my home wireless / wired network running XPs still work perfectly and connect to internet without any problem ...
- also, even on Dellrunning Windows 7 I have excellent signal, IP assigned, I can use shared disks and printer - everything, except for the internet access ...

then I tried:
- updating wireless router Linksys WRT54G to latest firmware
- played a while with router options ...
- backrolling wireless card drivers (actually I got it working for a few minutes at first try (!)) and never never again
- tried updating drivers of wireless card (Microsoft library, Dell support, manufacturer of the card - all of them)
- deinstalling, installing ... wireless card ..., deleting all connections, creating new connections ...
- spent hours of talk with internet provider (blaims Microsoft)
- spent some time talking to Microsoft (they blaim DSL provider ...)

So, it is a catch 22 situation, right ?

Help ?

P.S.: I have tried a few more thing, that I can not even remember anymore ;)

Hy,

well - actually I have got another exactly the same computer - you could say: absolutely fresh - with exactly the same problem ...

Actually, with my further exploration it gets a bit scarry:

- not only that NOD can update antivirus database inspite of 'no internet access' on wireless toolbar ...
- but (!), if I connect the computer to modem or router by wire, I get perfect internet access - however (!), when I plug out the network cable from my computer, it actually works for a few minutes also wirelessly (!!!) - thrust me no precashed pages - fresh google searches, random clicks .... IT ACTUALLY GETS ON INTERNET FOR A FEW MINUTES THEN FADES OUT SLOWLY BY DIMINISHING THE SPEED !!!

I am loosing my mind !!!

solution

with the efficient help from Microsoft call center the problem is finally solved

to make the very long story very short - nothing was wrong either with DSL provider, Microsoft or Dell ... the catch was in the Shrew VPN client (even when not active, some filter is active in wireless configuration ...)

tnx ;)

well, we took the long way ... but when we figured it out, it was extremely simple: if you are using Shrew VPN (don't use, if you haven't yet ...), go to wireless configuration settings, click properties and uncheck 'Shrew filter', confirm and save ... and that's it ...

if you want to run Shrew VPN client again ... you will have to turn 'Shrew filter' back again ... and as long as your computer is on, also internet should be working ... do it everytime you turn your computer on ... (uncheking and cheking Shrew filter in wireless configuration settings)

also, do not experiment with Shrew settings as it will get you into even more irecoverable troubles ... but that's another story ;)

Shrew VPN sucks !!!

Hello Guys,

I had this problem with my boss's Dell Laptop on Windows 7. It kept saying "Limited access" yet all our Dell XP office pc's were connecting wirelessly perfectly. It drove me mad for 3 days. (his laptop did connect fine before we went away travelling with it). I uninstalled the connection - re-installed it over and over gain. I even brought in my Windows 7 Toshiba Laptop (which connected fine). To compare settings.

In the end the only thing that got the Dell Laptop to connect to the wireless router was by Turning off one of the Network Adapters.

To do this: Right click on COMPUTER, then select PROPERTIES, then select DEVICE MANAGER. In there you should have NETWORK ADAPTERS. I had two a DELL one and a Marvell Yukon one. I DISABLED the MARVELL YUKON network adapter and the laptop connected to our WEP encrypted ROUTER straight away.

3 days of searching and this was the cuase. It was thanks to this forum that told me to try this.

Hope this helps you guys too.

All the best,

Rob (Oxted, Surrey, UK)

Hi,
Same problem on a sony vaio windows 7, 4months old all up todate belongs to my brother.
CHECK THIS OUT.
It works fine in this country wired or wireless but soon as he goes abroad to mates villas or ski chalets, he gets limited access. Then I get the phone call. I've tried most things that have been suggested on this forum.
Looking at trying to other things.
1) Turn off HOMEGROUP ( this will mess up the network at home but been told this can cause problems!!!.)
2) Change MTU settings from 1500 to something lower.(netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface “The Name of Your Connection” mtu=1492 store=persistent )
Both of these were made with out any really explanations as why in a new OS either of these settings would cause problems/conflicts.
I've also researched and found that unlike the internet access this problem is not limited to just a few, but to thousands of people.
