Thanks for your efforts. After some time fiddling with permissions I was able to add the IP addresses and computer names to the \etc\hosts file but this made no difference.

Aha - after a web search I found the answer.
It was necessary to go to Administrative Tools/Local Security Policy, then select Local Policies/Security Options and then select Network Security LAN Manager authenticatioin level and then in the drop down menu in the new window select Send LM and NTLM responses. Then all worked as I wanted, and I was able to map network drives and view folders on the Terastation.
Thanks again for all your time and effort
Best regards from Hawaii

You had to do all that to map a network drive? wow. I have a terastation too...I think I'll budget a bit more time for the install!
That's not so bad, just a click or two of the mouse, once you know where to point it!
signed up just to say cheers for sharing the fix for this, came across this problem this morning. so saved me googling it
Just to note I also have a Terastation NAS, one of the old Terastation Pro's, there is an updated firmware available which will upgrade Samba to version 3.
Version 3 of Samba supports NTLMv2 authentication, thus meaning you don't need to compromise security on your Windows Vista/7 machines.
