Internet Disconnections, 1-2 per a day

Hello, I need some help with my internet disconnection issue. I get 1-2 internet disconnections every day at random for about 3-5 minutes. I've had the issue for about 2-3 years, but Verizon never manages to fix them each time I ask for help.

I specifically have Verzion DSL as my subscription. I also have the ActionTec GT784WNV model as a combined router and modem from Verizon.

I have a desktop that is connected by wire, and a laptop that is wirelessly connected. When the internet goes down, both the desktop and the laptop lose internet connection. I'm assuming its not a problem with my two computers then because both lose connection at the same time.

I have replaced my filter, splitter, and other cables as instructed by Verizon customer support, but that's as far as it goes with them helping me.

Since I'm a computer science and networking student, I'd also like an explanation of what could be a problem with my internet connection so that I can at least understand it even if we aren't able to fix it.

    Thanks!

I'll contact them now and see if they can get me a new one. It'd be pretty silly if this was the problem the whole time.
However, each time I do contact them, they seem to put the blame on something else.

Ok, they sent in a new modem for free. I just have to send back the defective modem. Hopefully this fixes it. Thanks.
