    which is real internet speed for upload and download


    My modem or router shows some speed like 12495kbps and 621kpbs fro download and upload speed.
    The actual dsl speed does not shown in my router .
    Then there is a tab called network in the task manager, which if you select the bytespersecond received and sent as in the time gives some bytes and ever changing as we browse at the same time of downloading.
    Then there is a wmi explorer software, wmi has been deprecated by microsoft now, I suppose, and by accessing classes in the root/cimv2, by clicking tc-pip network interface perfraw data on bytes sent and received per second.
    May be this is the same as that of the taskmanager network . I do not know.
    Then there is websites that gives the speed of download and upload, mostly correct .
    If the network tab shows the correct bytes , then how do I arrive at actual speed of my download from the bytes?
    mere dividing the bytes with 1024*1024 do not give the correct speed. It shows unimaginable speed .
    My minimum network adapter speed is 10 and max 100mbps connection.

    Your download and upload Internet speed is not a fixed number. At any given time it is the speed between you and the web site you are connecting to. However, for comparison purposes the best you can do is used a program that measures your Internet speed to specific computer servers. Note these numbers will vary depending upon what program you are using to measure them. To complicate things the Internet traffic between you and the servers connected to varies. For example, the speeds measured in the middle of the night are usually higher because there is less Internet traffic then where you live.

    The best you can do is pick a program to measure your Internet speed and stick with it. If these speeds are comparable with what your Internet provider advertises then be satisfied. The wired Internet speeds should be close to these speeds as long as your Ethernet port on your computer is fast enough. Note that WiFi speeds greatly depend upon the speeds your router has and the wireless capability of your computer.

    To measure my Internet speeds I use a program called Speedtest by Ookla.

    You might look at the adapter settings. If you are using a wired ethernet connection go to the Control Panel; Network and Internet; Network Connection: Right Click on the Connection under Name; and select Properties. Another Window will pop up. Select the Configure button. There are a lot of setting under Details. The following are two pics showing examples of network configuration properties that can be changed:

    I know that it is not a fixed. But, when you download something from the internet, your speed shows, like 1.2mbps or 1.3, and sometimes 954kb etc.
    But how do I find these data in my pc is the query.
    Online sites do show such things, but you have to go to the site and do find the speed.
    The network tab, captures the speed per second of incoming and outgoing bytes , like wise wmi thro cimv2.
    Please read again the first query, and you know, what I want to know

    You indicate your network adapter is capable of 100 Mbps. Okay, this means that you can ONLY max your network adapter speed at that rate of 100 Mbps. This is to say that you have a max throughput of 100 Mbps. So, if you transfer files from one computer to another in the house or what ever you can ONLY go as fast as 100 Mbps.

    Consequently, this ALSO means you can only download and upload from the Internet at your network adapter's speed limitation which is 100 Mbps. But, BUT! for the Internet you're also limited to what your ISP (Internet Service Provider) allows. So, if for example you pay for Internet speed of say 50 Mbps download, that'll be the MAX you can possibility download even though your network adapter can go much higher at 100 Mbps.

    Now, there's another factor. Even though your ISP allows the example of 50 Mbps download, the website your connected to or what ever Internet service you're using ALSO has to allow that kind of speed. And it depends on how many servers you go though, the distance to the server/s, and their server overhead and other things. For my 50 Mbps example that shouldn't be much of an issue in today's world. All website's and their servers (websites are hosted from a server) typically should meet that speed and above. Though, if you're downloading something on some server they may limit the download rate to keep their server bandwidth in check or what ever. Hardware is another factor of course. Like your router, modem, and the hardware you're downloading from. If you have no control over the modem/router you're using they may have QoS (Quality of Service) turned on. Possibly further limiting your bandwidth of upload/download speed capability.

    It really is like a series of pipes for water volume and the rate (quantity over time) you can consume... Your computer has a big wide open pipe, then your ISP narrows that pipe down a little, and then websites can be narrowed down further. Don't forget the hardware.

    Now, about your math calculation. What you have there is incorrect.

    There are 8 BITS in a BYTE.

    There are 1024 BYTES in 1 Kilobyte (KB).

    So, how many bits are in 1024 bytes? You multiply.

    1024 * 8 = 8,192 bits.

    In dealing with Mb (megabits Lower case b) we divide by 8 to get MB (megabyte upper case B) Because we want to know how may 8 byte "units" fit into a MB (megabyte) from Mb (megabit). Understand? Bits to bytes.

    So, if your ISP Internet speed you pay for allows 50 Mbps (mega-bits-per-second) max download, then that is 6.25 MB/s (megaBYTES per second. (50 / 8 = 6.25) In theory, if your ISP allows you a 50 Mbps download rate, you should be able to download a 6.25 MB file in one second. If the file is roughly ~12 MB in size then about 2 seconds, etc.

    Now, what if your ISP gives you 100 Mbps (mega-bits-per-second) download allowing you to fully saturate your network adapter? How many megabytes would that be? 100 / 8 = 12.5 MB (mega-bytes-per-second). So, referring to that file size above of around ~12 MB in size, you should now be able to download that file in one second rather than two seconds since your 100 Mbps allowed download rate is twice as fast as a 50 Mbps download rate from your ISP.


    To help understand what your "true" Internet speed is you need to first know what your ISP allows. What do you pay for? Now go to three websites and do an average.

    Now, I said average, right? Take all three download speeds and add them together. If for example one website said, 23 Mbps the other 20 Mbps and the other 22 Mbps, that is 65. Now divide by how many instances were used. In this case three. So, 65 / 3 = 26.6, or your average download rate is 26.6 Mbps or 3.3 MBps (MB/s) This is called a mean average. Two other averages are median and mode. Median is the number in the middle and mode is how many times a number shows up. Most averages deal with mean. Anyway...

    Remember to always, ALWAYS keep your units consistent! If you're dealing with megaBITS, use megabits in ALL formulas. Dealing with megaBYTES then megabytes in ALL formulas. After you compute, then do what ever conversion is necessarily.

    This is VERY true for other things like; horsepower, watts, torque, ft * lbs, lb * ft, n * M etc.


    Tidbit:

    We know 8 bits = a byte, but what about 4 bits? What is that? It's called a "nibble."

    There are calculator Apps you can download for a phone or tablet. Many allow for unit conversions.

    Measuring your Internet speed through Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) is only good for your INTRAnet, local network at home, not the Internet.

    To measure Internet speed we of course need to measure from a point on the INTERNET. This is to say how fast you can pull for a server or servers. Refer to the three websites I gave a link to and do the average. There's no other way, and you're complicating this.

    Hi, simplot, Thank you so much about 8bits.
    ookla gives 9.79, the second gives 9.10 and the speedof me gives 10.27 mbps. I think that it is the megabits speed and not megabytes speed. the average works to be 1.3 mBps is it not. This is correct as I see the download speed in downloading shown in firefox browser.
    But the same data tallies with wmi script also, which takes the speed from wmi, root/cimv2 data.
    So, I ask, this query. Thanks to know extra about mB and mb.

    please see this thread. I sought a software. A script was shown to me. This script just takes the speed from wmi to show on my desktop always the download and upload speed.
    excellent tip by diz in that post, which I use.
    I got the confusion in speed because i do not know that mb refer for megabits and it should be divided by 8 to get MB.

    9.79 + 9.10 + 10.27 = 29.16 Mbps (mega-bits-per-second)


    29.16 / 3 = 9.72 Mbps (average mega-bits-per-second)


    9.72 / 8 = 1.2 MBps (mega-bytes-per-second) (which is the average in bytes).


    You were just off by 100 KB.

    A ten megabyte file should take you around ~8 seconds to download.
