brand new lappy.
its the Acer travelmate 5740G
fantastic specs - everything is nice and responsive, except that i can't connect my wireless at uni. the tech guy had a look at it and he can't figure it out either.
we did everything, including shutting down (eventually deleting) the AV because of its firewall. we set up the network exactly as everyone else does (and it works for everyone else).

the computer keeps suggesting that we check the router (but the router works). i can get net through RJ45 no worries but... i want my wireless to work.

any ideas? will answer more questions as needed.
bear with me. have not slept.

Could be many things. wee need more information to diax. it could be as simple as the modem is shut off. Yes there is a key combo to turn it on. Or it could be a driver (check in device manager). It could be a confiuration error.

Let us know the set up

ok, its a university router. basically, it services thousands of people a day and it doesnt stuff up.
i've started updating drivers, but none of them were that out of date to begin with.

the wnic is broadcom 802.11a/b/g/n. and dev.man seems to think it already has the best drivers.

just installed a driver for the MS wifi virtual miniport adapater... whatever that is.

there is no security key for this network. anybody with my university username/passcode can log on. basically the way we set it up makes it so that windows is meant to ask for additiona detals (the username/passcode) to log into the wireless.
trouble is, my lappy won't do this. it just says the router is broken.

should i start tinkering with IP config?

Besides the UID and Pword, the U admin should be able to tell you how to configure the laptop's wifi. Does the laptops see but is not able to log on, or does it not see any networks?

bump.

trying at home with my laptop and my billion router.

basically, no matter the router or its settings, i cannot connect to a wireless network, even though i can detect them. what is the problem?
my broadcom 802.11n network adapter apparently has the latest drivers, and i have a MS virtual wifi miniport adapter which also apparently has the latest drivers too.
is there anything i should be aware of? is this a defective model?

So do I. I started a thread about it earlier today re: my new desktop. It staggers me that soooo many people have this problem yet Microsoft hasn't released anything to say how to fix it.

If someone has a solution please let us know as it is killing me!!!!

I know it's a rather old thread, but has anyone found a solution for this problem? I think I might have the same. Exactly same brand new laptop won't connect to wireless networks although it can detect them.

can detect but not connect to wireless networks

Try completely reinstalling your wireless router. This worked for me and was not overly complicated.
