I am open to change. Thinking about it, I assume many people who hate or would hate the ribbon on Windows Explorer got the same opinion on this. Its just unattractive for us. I love the ribbon for Office, Paint and Wordpad but for Windows Explorer, like what I said, its a different thing and I don't like it there. Period.

I guess you will have the option to stay on Windows7 - or maybe XP. But it is good that you guys cannot hold up progress.

You got my point very wrong!!!! I would love to move on to Windows 8 and I'm sure many would but I just don't like the ribbon thing on Windows Explorer and its good that at least there's a feature to hide/disable it. If you like the ribbon thing, fine, that's your opinion but its wrong for you to assume that just because me and some other people don't want the ribbon for Windows Explorer means we rather stay on Windows 7 or Windows XP and would not move on to Windows 8. I completely agree with severedsolo, just because we don't like the ribbon for Windows Explorer doesn't mean we stand in the way of progress in general.

I love the ribbon because it does me very well on Office, Paint and Wordpad but on Windows Explorer its a different thing.

Microsoft once said "technology doesn't stand still and neither could we" but I do believe that we have ways on improving that most would still agree on.

For me, it's the amount of space it takes up on the screen. Visually it is too bulky looking for me. Even Windows 7's taskbar got the small icon treatment on my computers.

To me, simplicity is keeping things small and unobtrusive, not making buttons and menus duplo-block sized.

A little tip - why don't you hide the taskbar (can do the same with the ribbon - there it is called "minimize". Just right click on the ribbon and click "Minimize Ribbon"). I do that on the laptops. On the desktops it does not matter. There I have plenty of real estate.

The hidden task bar bugs me even more

I like having a taskbar, I just don't need a massive one.

i'm also not a big fan of all the pinned, combined buttons. I've gotten rid of all the pinned stuff, restored my Quicklaunch, etc...

Hmm, I never liked Quick Launch. It is too restrictive and hard to keep order in it. I prefer a Toolbar. There I can park 50 or 100 shortcuts and order them in subfolders by subject ( websites, programs, folders, etc.). See here for detail: Toolbars - How to Use in Windows 7 and Vista

Well hopefully any future version still allows customizability because clearly everyone likes something a bit different.

I use QuickLaunch for a few apps that I use regularly.

Now I'm one of those guys who has 30 icons on his desktop, but I use a program called Stardock Fences to keep them grouped and organized.

I don't like shortcuts on the desktop. I want to see my pictures from my last vacation - not icons. And all my shortcuts would not fit on the desktop anyhow (over 100).

The shortcuts I use ALL the time, I park on the taskbar and in the (hidden) Rocket dock). All the others are either in the start menu or in the toolbar (way over 50 neatly organized in folders).
