Microsoft: here's the new reality of Windows patches

I really hope they don't start doing this on 7 & 8 patches. I prefer to have a choice on what patches I apply. And MS isn't doing themselves any favors by being so secretive about nature of the updates and not revealing details.

'You cannot install a subset of a Windows 10 update,' says Microsoft. Hope you don't mind cumulative updates.

"In order to improve release quality and simplify deployments, all new releases that Microsoft publishes for Windows 10 will be cumulative," the document, last refreshed three weeks ago, stated. "This means new feature upgrades and servicing updates will contain the payloads of all previous releases, and installing the release on a device will bring it completely up to date."

The most recent example of a Windows 10 cumulative update shipped Tuesday. The update included the contents of four different security bulletins, Microsoft's term for the patches it distributes to older editions; an update to revoke digital certificates issued by router maker D-Link; and, as per its policy, an unknown number of "functionality improvements" that the firm won't reveal in any detail.

Microsoft has gone off the deep end.
Many home user will not even know this new method of updating.
To expect Enterprise and knowledgeable computer users to go for this type of updating is some where in the loony world.
People need to be able to choose what updates are installed.

Yea I know I saw a lot of windows updates waiting to install towards the end of my win-10 tour
Not sure what they were waiting for I hit install now so many times it got really boring and still did not work

It amazes me that MS has allowed users to pick and choose updates. It might be better* to have an OS where all parts of the code are installed.

*simpler, more stable, less chance of regression errors, simpler prerequisite checking, more secure.....

As long as the patch or patches do not break the software that you have installed on your computer. What do you do then? Roll back the huge patch (several 100Mb)or in the case of Windows 7 the 2 Mb file which is the culprit in the set of updates? So then if you want to use your software (Can even be an M$ program that gets bricked) you are more unprotected. This has escalated into complete madness on Microsoft's part. I for one can see the iceberg ahead and I have got my lifeboat downloaded and instead of running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit I'll be running Linux Mint Mate 64 bit with 32GB ram and using Windows Virtual machines to tinker with. By the time Windows 7 is EOL Microsoft will be sunk with no way back. I have used Windows since 1995 and built my own machines since 2000 so I have finally come to my senses. I have to learn a new system it may as well be a Linux based one rather than M$ walled garden.

Yep my concern is kb size and time it takes to download and install
I personally do not leave my stuff on all the time especially at night
10's update deal sounds pretty long in the tooth including everything associated with a security update
In 7 just checking for updates can and has been an long ordeal with a lot of people lately.

I always heard as, "If it don't fit, get a bigger hammer." MSpy just prefaces it with "bend over".

You might have to roll back the entire thing or there might be an option to remove the offending part of a bundled patch. However, I would guess that subsequnet updates would not install until the issue was resolved.

ThrashZone,
The time that it takes to download a large patch is not as big of a problem as the time that it takes to install it. Downloading can be done in tiny increments. We don't know if the installation be done a little at a time too. Probably not.

There should be an option to turn off peer to peer sharing of the patches for those that don't want to do that and/or those that have data usage limits.

If I remember correctly; Microsoft intruduced P2P for W-10 updates.

Yea, i found the p2p settings in W10, and turned it off.
I wasn't sure if i missed something and needed to check/adjust my W7 and W8.1 settings.

I couldn't find the tutorial on the 10 forum or I would of posted it.
I still don't know my way around the 10 forum very well.

Why would anybody trust a W-10 update using P2P. How would one know if the P2P update was tampered with? As far as I'm concerned P2P and Torrents are NOT to be trusted. Many infection are passed around the world using P2P and Torrents.

I agree, i don't use P2P.
I have read there are legitimate uses for it such as Linux updates, and some programs use it to distribute downloads/updates.
If i can download something legitimate once and share it with all my home PC's/OS's/Users ~~once~~, I'm for that.
Does it really work this way...I don't know for sure...

I turned it off too. But, it may be a bad explanation by Microsoft. It may just mean other computers on your network. I know that is a function. A computer on your home network can get updates from any other computer on your network running the same OS. It keeps your internet from having to download the same update over and over for every computer. So, it's possible that Microsoft is not talking about P2P, but other computers on your home network. Just an assumption on my part because like others here, I can't believe Microsoft would do real P2P for Windows Updates.
