Microsoft: here's the new reality of Windows patches

Since most of us have windows for a number of years and have had many MS fixes and patches, it might not be worth WU at all. They have a virus/patch and who knows where they will hide it? Since our 7's are running great (service pack, etc), just forgo any changes to it. The only exceptions are Security Essentials, drivers and anti-virus, but the last two are not exclusive to MS.

Update: MSFU uploaded security essentials EVENTHOUGH I have :"check for updates but let me choose..."
Here is the answer to this from MS's website:

Required Updates
If you turn on the Update Services, in order for them to properly function some software components on your system that make up or are directly related to the Update Services will need to be updated from time to time. These updates must be performed before the service can check for, download, or install other updates. These required updates fix errors, provide ongoing improvements, and maintain compatibility with the Microsoft servers that support the service. If the Update Services are turned off, you will not receive these updates.

Onward to "never check for updates".

This must be the stupidest piece of advice I've read in a long time, Protect yourself from an alleged threat to your data by opening up your system to any future exploits that can take all your data

Yep a bit rash turning off checking for updates
I used MSE for a number of years and now using Panda
After which even action center said it's not recommended to have 2 antivirus programs running which I suppose windows defender is the second and action center said the same,
So I did turn off defender

I have not had MSE re-download
In win-10 installing Panda did automatically turn defender off or at least the installation of Panda defender was turned off
So I don't see that as a problem since even the "latest and greatest 10" did the same

Not always. One of the reasons I got rid of it was it wouldn't update unless I did it manually.

Thanks, if its MSE only no problem, but until things clear up, all WU are on hold/review.

I would never recommend turning off Security programs updates and that includes Windows 7 Updates.

When MSE is installed in Windows 7 it should turn off Defender.
You should not have both running at the same time.

Just type Defender in the search off of the Start Orb, tick on Defender and will tell you whether it is turned off.

Just for information.
I can download updates of MSE just by using MSE or I can get MSE updates through Windows 7 Updates. I use both methods. Manually of course.
