    Massive memory usage when opening video files? (UPDATE, SCREENSHOTS)


    This problem just sprung up recently, this is something I've never had a problem with until now. My PC is an ASUS N73S Laptop; it's now about a year old. The CPU is an Intel Core i7, 2630QM, 2GHZ.

    When opening blu-ray video, (so far its only happening with .mkv format, though it seems to happen with both VLC and DivX player), for about 5-10 minutes I get what appears to be an invisible process hogging 95% of my PC's memory (meanwhile CPU usage still sits at idle, around 5%). There is absolutely no visible processes I can see in the task manager taking up this much ram. It'll also spike up occasionally afterwards while doing simple things like opening images or moving files.
    I have 6GB RAM, so I have no idea how this happens. When idle, my RAM usage usually sits at around 18-21%.

    If any more information is needed, I can try to provide it. Any help is appreciated..

    Hello yawnu and welcome to Seven Forums.

    Suggest you give Process Explorer a try. This is a free utility that shows much more information than Task Manager. You may be able to pinpoint which process (or sub-process) is hogging your resources.

    You could also use the built in Resource Monitor to see how your RAM is being allocated. Windows 7 isn't like previous versions. RAM is utilized to a greater degree. The Windows 7 philosophy is: "Unused RAM is wasted RAM."

    Okay so, I downloaded the Process Explorer, and decided to take a screenshot with both Process Explorer and Task Manager running to show that there is absolutely no indication of so much RAM being used when I open the .mkv file with divx player. Unless I am missing something? Someone please help me here.

    What do all the sudden hard faults mean? they were all at 0 until I exited divx player, then they started going haywire.

    When I exit divx player, it keeps going like this for about 5-10 minutes and then drops back down to 30%, which is even lower than it was before I opened the mkv blu-ray file.

    This never used to happen before. The file works fine, I can play it okay, there's no lag.

    The same thing happens when I open the file with VLC media player.
    Does it maybe have something to do with the video encoding/codecs?

    Should I try updating software/drivers?

    Try another player like Media Player Classic Home Cinema, else, you have a nasty codecs issue which may require a clean install.

    im also facing this problem, this is happened in my laptop when opening MKV file in subfolder(not open it yet with my Media Player) just want see & rename or move it to another location memory is coming up like hell lol then i killed explorer in task manager & open new task again.. i just downloaded unlocker 64bit and kill process after that it can be renamed & moved or deleted..
