Fully charged--consider replacing your battery message

Today, my Toshiba Satellite C655 which runs Windows 7's battery indicator changed from saying "64% charged" or "61% charged" to a red X over the battery symbol with a message reading "Fully charged (100%)--consider replacing your battery".

Does anyone have any idea how long I might be able to continue to use my laptop before the battery finally dies and/or my laptop no longer comes on?

How long can your laptop run without a battery?

Today, I got a red X over my battery indicator on my Toshiba C655 which runs Windows 7. I read elsewhere that it is possible to run such a laptop without a battery if necessary. I tried that for several minutes with no problem.

But now I am curious if anyone around here has tried that on their laptop, and how long were any of you able to still use your laptop without a battery until or unless it finally stopped and would no longer turn on.

Why on Earth would you think a laptop needs power from a battery? The "machine" just needs power. Battery or from your mains power from the wall. It doesn't matter and it doesn't know or care.


I have a laptop now without a battery running 24/7 using just the wall wart. Like your battery, it died and I never went to replace it. I did the same for a netbook.

What's the serial number and the complete part/product number of your Toshiba Satellite C655 series laptop?

I agree with post #2.
As long as the power adapter does what it's suppose to do, your laptop should continue to run.

You should remove the battery and just use mains power until an OEM battery can be bought. Mind you, I said OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). Don't buy some cheap knock off. Why? It's a fire hazard and you could harm your laptop. Same for power adapters. I have a no name Communist China made piece of shit adapter and it's super light weight compared to the original. I wonder why....? I don't even use it.

What is the model of laptop?

And so I CAN take the battery out of the laptop and run it long-term? Cool. (Sorry for sounding like a complete computer neophyte. )

Thank you for your reply and your advice to stick with a replacement battery made by Toshiba themselves for my particular laptop (C655-S5082).

According to that laptop's marketing specs, it came with:
6-cell, 48Whr, Lithium-ion battery
65W (19V x 3.42A) auto-sensing ,100-240V/50-60Hz AC adapter

A replacement battery is cheap, but as old and slow as that laptop is, you would need to decide whether the cost is justified.

The really important factor is the UL listing. A lot of the cheap knock off batteries, power adapters, extension cords, surge protectors, you name it doesn't have the UL listing criteria and could be unsafe to use. Trying to find UL listed products that were tested by UL on everyone's favorite China emporium Amazon is like pulling teeth form a badger.

A lot of these so-called "climate pledge friendly" products are probably not even ISO9001.

Keep in mind some crap companies have been known to fake the UL label. Thus is why you may see it in holographic format on extension cords. Product iQ | UL Solutions You can search the abridged directory without login.

My laptop can run for 2 hours and 30 minutes without charge from 100%

As stated, you don't need a battery at all to run a computer, it just became a "smaller desktop" computer instead of a notebook, in that it'll power off when you disconnect it or power goes off. But there is no limitation at all, it could run its entire lifetime without a battery at all and it'll work just fine, you only lose the ability to move it far from the wall socket.

Personal note here, I've got a notebook with a dying battery and finally ended up removing it when it no longer could power the computer at all. I continued to use the computer for 3 or 4 more years (if memory serves) without the battery without any major problem.

Why would you ever ask this on a public forum? The question certainly doesn't needs this kind of private data to be answered and if it does, you could direct the OP to the relevant support site and let he enter the private details there.

That's really not exactly "private" information...
