Software won't install and "access denied" issues
After I happily switched back to XP for a while, I was forced to do something, because my XP system partition gave me a lot of grief with the infamous events 51 and 9 and the day before yesterday I virtually stumbled from one BSOD to the next, while preparing a new 7 install on a different hd. I kind of resigned myself to the fact that this was a sign that it was time to move on. Alas, my new 7 Pro 64bit and me, we don't get along so well.
I was afraid, that really old programs (the ones you really need) would not work, but still, what do they have that compatibility mode for? And what was that about an integrated virtual XP? Something about an additional download from the microsoft site? I only found the usual updates.
But what really annoys me, are programs specificially for 7 that won't install with stupid errors like "The system cannot find the file specified." Please check your settings and try again. Yeah, sure, as if it was not the definition of insanity to repeat the same action and expect a different outcome. And by the way, which file? This really can drive you insane. I ran this in combatibility mode for XP SP2,3. I ran it as administrator (I am admin, duh!). I took ownership of the file. Nothing. And the funny thing about one specific install, it requires framework 2.0... which isn't at all compatible to 7, haha. Are they stupid or what?
Another funny install attempt, see attached error.
This, too, is for Win 7, according to the website. I browswed to the file I was asked to verify if I could access it and what do you know? I accessed it and the install proccess started all over again. So I had proven that I had access, but the same error came again. What do they want from me?
And a real turn off are the constant "access denied" messages when I try to access files I need to access. What, are we in a bad old movie and I have to guess someone's wife's birthday and use it as a password somewhere? (where?)
How can this thing shut me out of my own files? I can't use an OS that wants to tell me I can't do this or that. I usually know what I'm doing, if I'm not sure, I look it up before I do something potentially "dangerous". But I never intended to do anything, just look into a folder. Well, for starters, anyway. And it's MY folder *stomps foot*.
I downloaded that "take ownership key" I found here and man, I tried to own my whole computer! But still, some folders remain locked. For example the "found folder" on my troublesome XP partition, which I scanned from this one, because all attempts at repairing it before startup ended in a loop.
Okay, I think it's enough for now, though not at all the last of the annoyances I came upon since yesterday. Can anyone tell me if there is even a way to install software on this OS or can I forget it and use XP again. Again. Sigh.
