A/V Software Questions (Conflicts?)

I run Avast on 5 computers.So that and some common sense has kept us safe over the last 3 years.

Avira is known to cause BSODs in certain configurations. so I stick with Avast Free Edition.

False positives you will get from every scanner that uses heuristic (behavioural) scanning methods.
Those false positives usually come up as generic something or other.
If you're in doubt, load the file in question up to Virus Total and see what they say. That's certainly safer then to trust just one scanner.

Hi Paul,

A layered approach to security is generally the recommened strategy to take since one single product doesn't have the capability to detect every single threat. For example, "Product A" might detect threats P,R, and T whilst "Product B" might detect threats Q and S. If you use both products, then you improve your chances of detecting threats P,Q,R, S and T.

In terms of resident anti-malwars products, there is some divided opinion. Many recognised experts doubt the merit of having two resident products. I have both MSE and MBAM resident and have't yet had a conflict. I'm sure others have similar setups. I think its a matter of personal preference and experience.

If in doubt, have one resident, and use the other in an on-demand mode. However, it is generally accepted that 2 or 3 products compliment one another, and that is my recommendation.

Sure Paul, but many have such small footprints relative to the large, cheap disks available....space shouldn't really be an issue.

FWIW, I use Microsoft Security Essentials + Malwarebytes. It is a lovely combination, quite lightweight but heavy-hitting. And free.
