Hi,
What program can I use to edit a .theme file? By edit I mean change its "X" button, taskbar buttons, etc.

Those are in the aero.msstyles not the .theme file, you can use a resource editor for that but it's not easy, I use Ave's Windows7 Style Builder it's only about $22.60 US and they have a forum with maps and tutorials you can join after buying it.
You should start a new theme so you do not mess up the default theme look at post #38 it will show you how. Start menu color change ??
Have a look at this youtube video

Hi, Jerry,
Thanks for your reply. I am trying to edit a 3rd party theme called 7.5. I didn’t notice the .msstyles files, which I have adequate experience editing using Resource Hacker in my XP days. I just assumed that the .theme extension replaced .msstyles in Windows 7.
That good to hear, if you need any image #s post a link to the theme and I can use WSB to get the #s.

It would seem that my adequate experience is outdated. I have no idea what I’m doing with PNGs! In XP, they were always BMPs.
The theme that I want to edit is called Seven and a Half. I will explain exactly what I am trying do with it.
This is what the "X" button looks like when the mouse is over it in an inactive window. (The cursor is not visible in the screenshot.)
This is what the "X" button looks like when the mouse is not over it in an active window.
I want to replace the active non-mouse-hovered "X" button in the second image with the the inactive mouse-hovered "X" button in the first image. In other words, I want the "X" button shown in the first image always to appear unless the mouse is over the "X" button in an active window.
Is this something that you can do?
Thank you,
Rand Marks
I went and bought Style Builder. You’re right! It is easier to use than ResHacker. I was able to do what I wanted in minutes. Thanks!
Now you're set to go, I found this to be the most reasonable software I have ever bought for what it does.
