Hello,

Setup is as follows: Laptop windows 7 64 bit. Desktop windows xp service pack 2.

Before today, had the computers (along with a 3rd laptop which has the exact same details as above) connected via a workgroup. Today I moved the internet from one provider to another, and my file and printer sharing was no longer operational.

Its worth noting that I only was able to go from windows 7 and access files and a printer connectd to the windows xp computer, and not the other way...frankly thats how it was before, and I am ok with that.

I tried alot of things, before reading that I should check windows firewall. So i shut off windows firewall on the xp computer, and low and bhold i can access files and the network printer as I used to be able to.

So that said, I read (by a user I believe from this forum, not sure) that I need to configure windows firewall for trusted access (I think it was access, maybe I have the word wrong). I have no idea how to do this, and my google searching has not taken me very far.

Would super appreciate assistance configuring my firewall.

Thanks!

I've tried that, but that wont work. When I apply the exception and turn the firewall back on, does not work.

Also, re SP2..my windows version is registered and all, but after 99% of the SP3 service pack installation, I get an error message (something to the effect of my windows code being invalid or something)

Do Windows Update, it should prompt you to validate your Windows XP to proceed updating what's needed including the SP3.

so managed to get my windows up to SP3, but now i have a backlog of updates that wont install (they are mostly related to 3.5 something)

Upgrading to SP3 hasnt really helped. I have tried to change windows firewall exceptions but no impact.

Any other suggestions? Is there a way I can 'reset' things?

If I do a system restore to a date before last week (when everyting was working fine), what will I lose exactly?

Yes, you may definitely do a System Restore. You will lose all software that were installed and windows updates.

If System Restore did not work, you may try a sfc /scannow or Repair, seems to be that there might be something wrong with your O/S if you can't do Windows Updates.
