You should be able to install to the 1tb Sata Segate if it is the only drive connected. and the bios is set to recognize SATA as IDE. Boot set to boot first from DVD Drive.

We've seen a lot of issues with Asus mother boards, here are some of the suggestions that have worked.

First suggestion, go to your BIOS and turn off the Quiet & Cool, we've seen this cause a lot of installs to fail.

What is your Plug and play setting in BIOS?

Have seen a lot of problems with RAM in the x64, maybe the same in x86, you can try taking out all but one RAM card.

Any Over Clocking of the RAM, CPU or GPU?
Reset to defaults.

Disconnect all peripherals except monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Try the installation with the above suggestions.

Are you using a DVI cable?
Try using a VGA if you can.

Some more interesting notes:

Vista which I have installed successfully on this computer will not install now and I get the same error 0x80070241. On my Sata or an old 80GB IDE drive. This goes for Win7 too. I cannot install this yet on a SATA, IDE, or even flash drive.

My only thoughts are something with my mobo or other hardware? (I did do what you said Dave with the quiet & cool, as well as minimal hardware.)

It perplexes me that Vista now won't install either on a clean WinXP install (and the WinXP is a retail copy). Vista is a copy I have used 2 times already on this machine, I got free from a college I attend part time as part of their student software program. This is the first time that has ever happened that Vista gives me the same error as Win7.

My only thoughts are to stop everything and wait til I upgrade to a newer machine in a year or two and sit on XP... what is frustrating is that even if I want to do Vista, it won't let me anymore even though a few months ago it was no issue.

Could you try another DVD drive, maybe this one is having trouble reading the DVD ?

Is there anything on the drive that you want to save? I'm thinking you might want to nuke the entire drive using gparted or some other utility, then try installing 7 again. If Vista doesn't install now, removing all partitions might be just what the doctor ordered (no pun intended, Doc!)

Did you check the Plug and Play setting in BIOS?

This worked for Asus boards previously.

Are you using a DVI cable?
Use VGA if possible.

Do you have two RAM cards?
Try running a memtest, just to rule that out.

Did you try Adrians suggestion to load new MOBO drivers including chipset?

Let us know the suggestions that you try, we can continue to pursue this.

Here is another idea

Insert the Vista Install DVD
move to CMD and do a new FORMAT of HDD
Then replace with the Win 7 Install DVD....
Reboot and it should work then....
Vista Format auto sets HD to active.

Therefore the HDD is pre-formated & should be seen by win7 Install

I actually grabbed a Celeron 2.66Ghz board and installed upon booting up with the Win7 DVD. Worked. I went over everything with the ASUS board and could never find out what went on with it. My brother has the same board and used the Win7 Beta and it worked for him. Either way, I've solved my problem. Win7 is running fast and no issues.

I'd like to thank everyone who has taken the time to help me try to troubleshoot this. I wish I had more time to keep diggin at the ASUS issue but alas I have my Win7 running. Thanks again!

Now I can update my system spec here
